: low cost FIBERGLASS? fenders. Heard of this place?
feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 04, 3:50 AM Anyone bought from "unlimited products" www.up22.com (http://www.up22.com) they have a ton of stuff and at realllllly great prices. There in CA which means a quick ship for me, but I get reamed with sales tax :D There fenders are only $149. I think they are fiberglass? All I know is fiberglass is lighter. Someone let me know about this kind of stuff, the company, and fiberglass products? Does fiberglass paint the same, prime, body work? Does it crack or have problems? Ive never used it, sounds kind of fun though.
feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 04, 4:09 AM And more importantly! You cant weld on fiberglass can you? What about bending it? whew....
ELLI Jan 26th, 04, 10:11 AM Almost every experience anyone has had with fiberglass parts has been bad. But it depends on what your ultimate goal is for your car. FI your are building an all out drag car then yes fiberglass would be the way to go. But if you are building a nice street machine to look good as well as run good then I would stick with metal. There is not much of a price difference anymore between the Goodmark repo's and the cheapy fiberglass ones. The fiberglass ones do not fit worth a darn, they will crack and you really do not save that much weight over sheetmetal. I would just save some money and buy the good quality goodmark fenders.
7Deuce Jan 26th, 04, 4:11 PM I have the Fiberglass fenders on my 72 Chevelle, from UP22. They take alot of work to get on. They dont come with any mounting tabs, its just the skin. What I did is I took the inner structure out of my old steel fenders(do not confuse this with the inner fenderwell), by prying the fender skin off (lots of work man!!!). So by using the inner structure I had a solid fender still, with the proper mounting points, I bolted in and laid the fiberglass piece over it and fabbed up simple brackets for the bottoms of the fenders that bolt to the undercarraige. Then I bonded the inside of the skin to the steel inner structure with resin. It looks good, and is very sturdy, but for the amount of work and time put into it, if you have the money get the repro. steel fenders. If I were to do it again, I wouldn't, Im a student and I dont have the time to do that type of stuff again. Hope this helps.

feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 04, 5:44 PM Thanks guys, maybe ill steer away from the fiberglass then. Sounds like a beast to get in, and its not going to be a full fledged drag either. Ill keep an eye out for a good price on the steel. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
RacnJsn95 Jan 26th, 04, 7:04 PM Most people don't usually have too many problems with fiberglass, it just depends on where you buy it. From what I hear Unlimited Products' products ( :D ) are of very low quality, hence the cheapness... There are other places to get fenders, some that are bolt on, but they are more expensive, and I hear the weight loss isn't much for the cost. No you can not weld on fiberglass... You can bend it to some extent, but too much and it will break. Whatever you decide, I'd stay away from UP.
feedphillipnow Jan 26th, 04, 7:27 PM Thanks! I value the opinions on this site greatly smile.gif I'll definately go with new fenders, I think NPD has the best price. NPD rocks my socks, nice people. Good good stuff. I considered welding in the lower patch because thats the only rusts area, But I might as well save the time and risk and just go with brand new fenders, cant go wrong there! graemlins/thumbsup.gif But damn, stuff sure does add up $$$
:D
RacnJsn95 Jan 26th, 04, 9:42 PM You know that if you become a Team Chevelle member, you can get a 10% discount at Ground Up (http://www.ss396.com)? I'm not sure if that would be cheaper than NPD.
feedphillipnow Jan 27th, 04, 2:54 AM Hmm, darn tempting smile.gif I'd get the nice flag by my name too, I'll check into it
