: deck filler first or quarter panel....

I need to weld in a new deck filler(piece between trunk and rear window) and a passenger quarter. The LH quarter was replaced about 5 years ago for me by a shop.

I dont have the parts yet but which one do I do first, or both at the same time.

This being my first major body work, I dont want to cut too much out. That way I can keep everything lined up.

Chris,
I believe it would be best to change both. You need to drill out the spot welds connecting the filler panel to the quarter. Having one quarter off when you remove the filler would be much easier. If alignment is a concern, measure the new filler dimensions before you start. If both are the same dimensions. You can tack weld steel dowels to trunk floor that touch the bottom of the filler old filler. This will assure the height dimension. Set the new filler against the dowels. The window opening shouldn't be a problem. A key is to measure, write down the measures, and confirm measures of filler before welding it solid. The replacement quarter will but up against the filler.

chris,

the deck panel and the top of the quarter are welded right at the joint that you can see. they both have 90 degree bends at the ends and are welded together.

when i did my 68 i had one quarter off when i replaced the deck panel. on the end that i didn't take off i cut the old panel off about 1/2 inch from the joint. and cut the end off the new panel. then but welded the two pieces back together. if yours is still good in this area you may be able to do the same.

this part was the best fitting of the aftermarket panels i used. i think they are all made in tiawan but it fit really well. if you have to get the whole panel out i would say it could be done with the quarters on. but getting at the welds will be a real pain.

also don't worry about lining it up when you get the old one out it will be very obvious where the new one needs to go. its a very nice fit. theres like a little pan underneath. make sure you get all the rust out of there while you have it apart. I.E. sandblasting.
