Go back to the manufacturer to determine what the repaint/over paint requirements are. If you by chance used PPG go to their Web site:

Best topcoat finishes today are BC/CC

Depending on the brand and part number some you can paint over some you can't. But even if there is a recommendation to top coat like for NAPA Martin-Senour #8847 Trio-Prime, I still would put a urethane primer over it for cushion. The paint needs this cushion to resist chips. The paint on top is not half as important as the undercoat for this protection. Picture painting a cue ball and painting a rubber ball, same paint, now drop them on the floor. The cue ball would chip much worse because of the lack of a cushion. If you are painting "hard part" like the frame or hinges or something like that, painting over the etching primer is a good way to go so you don't have to sand the darn thing again, (with #8847, you have 24 hours to top coat without sanding). But on a Hood or fender, etch prime it and then prime it with a good urethane primer and you can sand it with 320 to 600 depending on the top coat you are using and paint right on top. That is the slick way to go.

That's fine to apply etching primer over existing paint. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
