I'm doing body work on my 72 and I was thinking of doing the painting also. but i don't have a compressor or gun so i was thinking of just spaying the primer myself. can primer be sprayed with a smaller compressor? and chaeper gun? friend of mine at work, does bodywork on the side and good jobs will spray the paint for me for $100 so I thought a smaller compressor would do ok for me. I would be useing some tools also, DA,etc. thanks for your input. :D

I'm no pro, so take this for what it's worth. I am doing the same thing, just spraying primer and leave the pro's t0 apply the BC/CC. I have a Coleman 5hp 20 gal. compressor and it will not even come close to running a DA sander. I had to search and search for a pressure feed gun that my compressor would even run. The CFM on all HVLP's I looked at were too high. Be carelful and check out the CFM required for each tool, compared to the output of the compressor. I think you'll find that a large compressor is needed to run that type of equipment.

Im no pro eather, but I have a 5hp 30 gal craftsman and it runs my inline sander ok but not the da.i bought a hvlp gun that matched scfm output on the compressor. So far ony sprayed primer.came out ok...Buying the biggest comp possable seems to be the best advice.Wish I would have...

can you get anything bigger than the 5hp in single phase?

most I have seen jump from there to the big 3 phase motor / multi stage compressor jobs that cost $$$ and require 3 phase power.

That's what I've seen also. My cousin did buy a 20 gal. 2 stage (I guess it's a 2-stage, it had the seperate motor and pump) that ran off of 120. I never used it, but he claimed it would run all the stuff he had. I know the CFm output was much higher than mine.

I bought a reman platinum gun from sharpe for $175. This gun will work properly with only 7.5 cfm. Some smaller compressors will provide that cfm. On another note my cheap d/a sander seems to drain my compressor almost instantly. I think its going to be a problem.

Hey guys, I'm prepping to do the prime and paint myself too. I got a nice little HVLP gravity feed gun and a seperate cheapie for primer which I heard was reccomended. As for compressors, all Ive got is a PowerPal 1/2 HP 110PSI pump, it fills the tires up smile.gif I was going to prime with it, it works alright. I dont understand exactly what difference the HP makes, I thought it was only the PSI? Maybe someone can give a quick easy to follow explain for me :D
