: How Noisy is a solid?
RedSS454 Dec 9th, 05, 9:26 AM I took the car out for a ride yesterday, and the noise from the lifters go me wondering: How noisy are the solid lifters supposed to be? I never had a Solid cam before, so I am not sure if teh noise is normal, or the valves need adjustment. Its a solid roller if that makes a difference.

blown/away Dec 9th, 05, 9:43 AM they are kind of loud..but some hyd. make noise too. i rather know its from lash , than a faulty hyd.lifter..i had a low lash solid roller that lashed at only .010 .it clatters. my other one ,the lash is .028
Malibu Vette Dec 9th, 05, 9:47 AM A solid lifter engine sounds somewhat like a sewing machine. You can hear the valve train but it should not be anoying. If you hear one prominant lifter tap there could be a lash problem on a single lobe.
69boo307 Dec 9th, 05, 10:19 AM with my solid I can distinctly hear the 'sewing machine' type noise with the windows up. I don't think it should be tapping, ticking or making too much clatter though unless something isn't adjusted right.
With the windows down, the exhaust easily drowns out the valvetrain :)
onovakind67 Dec 9th, 05, 11:16 AM We run a real quiet exhaust system in our road racer and the cam noise is the prodominant noise in the car, windows up or down...
71454Chevelle Dec 9th, 05, 12:16 PM My Isky solid roller is pretty noisey.
The lash is recommended to be set at .028", but I have mine adjusted to .025". It difinitely has the sewing machine sound (a noisey sewing machine) but I love that solid lifter sound.
Music to my ears.
Keith Tedford Dec 9th, 05, 2:38 PM The lifters in a 302 set at 30-30 are noisy. Our 427 at 20-24 could still be heard. At 24-28 the lifters were definitely there. The person who really hears the thrashing is the one you pull up beside. It's definitely an intimidation factor to most people's ears. The sound is all business....even if you have a slow car. Driving down the highway, all the other noises drown out the lifter sounds. Hydraulic lifters are the stealthy way to go.
blumont Dec 9th, 05, 2:40 PM I can faintly hear mine. The full roller rockers on mine make more noise than the lifters

Same here (hear? :) ) But lately, I can't hear the rockers or lifters, because of the buzz of the MSD!! Aside from that annoyance.... the lifters do sound like a smooth sewing machine. It grows on you though.. very
RedSS454 Dec 9th, 05, 7:14 PM Thanks guys. I think they are pretty close, but after 'hearing' on here what they shuold sound like, I'll check them to make sure.

Bob West Dec 9th, 05, 8:43 PM Buzz of the MSD? sounds like something aint right. I could lash my old Lunati solid cam pretty tight and would sound like a hydraulic cammed car,it was supposed to be 24-28 and I'd go 18-20. The current solid roller (lash .016) made more noise with stamped steel valve covers, went to the comp polymers, you can still hear them but not near as bad.
SSchevy400 Dec 10th, 05, 9:35 AM Yea i agree, you shouldnt have a Buzz of the MSD!!
My solid is lashed at .016 and most people cant even tell its a solid at idle because its so quiet. When driving tho you can hear a tiny bit of sewing maching sound when your are driving next to the car.
chevfan_1 Dec 10th, 05, 10:58 PM MSD's suck, they have went out and left me stranded more than once. How often do you have to adjust valves on a solid roller street engine that hits 6500 daily?

My builder told me as long as you have a good valve train (Roller rockers, Pushrods, Lifters and whatnot) You should only have to adjust once or twice a year. You should check it before you race it....but shouldnt need adjusting unless something is wearing down, or getting loose.

Yeah, I know.... everything seems to work fine, just makes noise now. It used to be quiet.... well, when it lets go, I'll just have to replace that too. :)
Da_chevyman Dec 11th, 05, 7:33 PM All the cams I've run has been solid. Flat tappet or roller.
Even when I was a teenager, my 78 Toyota Corolla 4 cylinder had a solid flat tappet cam it -).
It sounded like a sewing machine, making all of 64 or so horsepower @ best.
Boy, from what you guys are saying about the noise of the MSD box. I am surely pretty glad to tried something different and went with the ACCEL 300+ box on ignition side.
That thing does'nt make a noise.
But, if you want to hear how one Ultradyne solid roller and how it sounds check out the "mill" link in my signature block.
Happy Holidays
