: "Driveway" Paint Job
pnugent Aug 16th, 00, 3:34 PM A friend of mine said I could paint my chevelle in my open driveway (when I'm ready). He said on a day when it's not windy, you can actually do a good job with primering, base and clear coat. Was he just pulling my leg? Has anyone tried this? I would hate to invest time and materials for a job like this if it will look bad. Thoughts on this?

If you have a garage then do it in the garage. Wet the floor down and try to keep as much dust and particles out of your paint. Once its there its very hard to get out with wet sanding and just looks very bad. You can get away with a driveway paint job but with an open environment like that I wouldn't try it. Not to mention your neighbor that is an enviromental freak geek may call the cops on you and the EPA would come out and fine you heavily. This is worse case sinario, but use a cool calm head when thinking about this and do the job right once so you won't have to hassle this again in the near future.

Byfield Aug 16th, 00, 5:02 PM It won't take a tree hugger to get the cops on the phone. I'd call in a heartbeat if my neighbor was painting his car in the driveway.
The last thing I want is his paint on my car, siding, pets, etc.
Either use a garage, build a tent, or rent a storage garage for a month. Outside is just looking for trouble, not to mention bugs in your paint.

MARTINSR Aug 16th, 00, 8:23 PM Call the body shops in town, some will rent you the booth. VERY cheap insurance. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Randy Mosier Aug 16th, 00, 9:29 PM Not only that, but a number of shops will shoot the car for you once you have all the prep work done. They may or may not let you tape it off in their shop. Some are a little more uptight than others about the liability issues. There's no reason why you can't do the body work, etching primer, and sanding primer yourself. Indoors of course.
283v8 Aug 18th, 00, 7:04 AM I know several guys who have done "driveway paint jobs" - most look pretty good, but ALL have some trash in the paint. Some more than others. None have close neighbors. ANYTHING that touches it till it is almost dry will stick - dust, bugs, tree thingies, etc.. they are hard to get rid of after dried. DO NOT try to get em out when it is wet - it will be a MESS.
If I had the equipment and tight budget, I'd do it in a minute.

Make it look the way you like it, forget what the other guys say!
mr409 Aug 18th, 00, 4:46 PM I've done several outdoor paint jobs at my house. Gotta pick a real good day though! When you don't have a garage to paint in, ya have to improvise. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
As for the neighbors...with the **** I put up with from them, they can choke on a few paint fumes from me. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif
