: Trunk weather stripping that allows trunk to close
68Malibu Oct 11th, 04, 11:34 AM I have a '68 and just installed Soft Seal weather stripping and the trunk is very hard to close and it now sticks up beyond the body since the weather stripping pushes up so hard. I left the trunk closed for about five days, opened and closed it several times after that and nothing has changed.
I know that Metro claims to have softer weather stripping but wondered if anyone who has used it can speak up. Seems like it needs to be firm enough to push up against the trunk lid to seal properly. Is Metro firm enough?
Jim Streib Oct 11th, 04, 3:43 PM I have never tried products from Metro but have used Soffseal before and had good results with it.
I just have something I want to throw out, is the weatherstrip lip up too high ?. I know when I had to put quarters on my car I had to work on the position of the weatherstrip channel to get the right gap between it and the bottom side of my hatchlid to where the weatherstrip material still applied pressure to the underside of the hatchlid but was not overly smashing it. Could maybe someone have bent it up trying to get the old original weatherstrip to seal ?. It may be something to look at.

68Malibu Oct 11th, 04, 4:01 PM Jim,
Thanks for the suggestion. When I bought the car, it still had original paint and I removed the original weatherstrip and I was very careful when doing that. I will look at everything again though.
Jim Streib Oct 11th, 04, 5:35 PM Hey, no problem. I think that the factory rubber was more softer than the Soffseal brand I bought as I also saved, or tried to anyway my old seal just in case I ran into a problem like yours.
You may want to (with a very trusted freind of course) remove the weatherstrip and get inside the trunk yourself armed with a flashlight and have the trunk lid closed to where you can take a look at the gap between the channel and the underside of the trunk lid. If you see an area that is looser than in other area's take a small section of the weatherstrip and install it in the channel in that area and then place a piece of paper on top of it so it's hanging to the outside of the car and close the lid. If there is some drag on the paper when you remove it then the rubber should have enough pressure to make a seal. If it's too loose then tap the channel up in that area and down if too tight.

LeoP Oct 11th, 04, 11:09 PM Metro more closely resembles the original and is softer that Soffseal.
JohnC Oct 12th, 04, 2:40 AM I put Soffseal on my 67. It closed hard at first, but it gets better. Closes pretty good now, but then again, the weatherstripping was put on years ago.

68Malibu Oct 12th, 04, 7:25 AM Thanks guys! I will check out the lip on mine to make sure it does not allow the weatherstrip to go up to high and if that is okay, I will go with Metro.
deiinc Oct 12th, 04, 7:59 AM I used metro on a 70. Seemed a little to tight at first, but after a few weeks closed it is now just right. Be carefull as it looked like there were a few ways that it could go on. No diagram with the seal either, made it tricky, at least for me. Old seal off for a year during body work and tossed out didn't help either.
Carl's 67 SS Oct 12th, 04, 10:29 AM where do you buy metro products?
68Malibu Oct 12th, 04, 4:04 PM https://secure21.activehost.com/metrommp/default.aspx
or www.metrommp.com/ (http://www.metrommp.com/)
I guess they sell to individuals... have not tried yet.
