OK, so the little bit of bondo around the windshield of my '66 convert was hiding a bondo/brazed mess. Well, with a new windshield channel and dash top, fresh paint and everything back together I am ready to set the windshield. Any suggestions as to a seal? 3M has a kit with a rounded bead and the spacing blocks. Looks like it would work to set the windshield, shoot urethane sealer around the bead as insurance and pop the moldings on. Will this work or do I need to order from Year One, pay, $18.00 and lose the weekend while I wait a week for delivery. Or, do you guys have some other suggestions? Thanks, as always!

Just be careful not to overdo it with the urethane, you don't want to fill the well up with it. Set the glass in the car with the rubber blocks (no butyl tape) and place a piece on masking tape on the glass and the body to mark the place you want it to go. Check which way you are going to put the blocks, they are made to rotate them so you can raise or lower the glass for a perfect fit. INSTALL THE CLIPS FIRST, with the glass out. You won't want to try after, I think your '66 should have screw in clips on the posts as I remember. Get some window pinch weld primer, and apply it where the butyl tape will go, and around the clips that you have installed so any scratches will be covered.

I like to put the butyl tape on the glass right on the edge. Set the glass in, and then add a small strip of urethane sealant right at the bottom edge of the glass, right on the butyl tape. Using a plastic spatula (1/2" wide) spread the urethane so it goes from the top of the glass down to the pinch weld right below the butyl tape. With it sealed this way, water that enters the channel won't be trapped to cause more rust.

I have installed these windows many times with no urethane whatsoever, only butyl tape, and it has worked very well. I only use the urethane when there is an uneven surface that the butyl tape may not seal.

TIP: allow the butyl tape to get warmed up after installation and push down on the glass to seal.

One last thing: wear latex gloves and do not get the urethane on anything you do not want it on. It will not come off your hands and many other surfaces. Have fun! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
