: 70 Chevelle SS Question

I looked at a 70 chevelle today that I got a tip on. The guys friend that told me he thought it was an LS6. It has a crate LS6 motor that has about few thousand miles on it. The guy bought it from GM years ago. I guess the guy’s brother had an LS6 years back and that is why he bought the crate motor. This car has been in the family for over 20 years. The chevelle is supposed to be a BB SS. It has a 4 speed, 12 bolt, buckets and cowl hood that look correct. It does have the return fuel line. It had air at one time so it was not a high hp car. The car looks to have most of the original sheet metal. The floors, trunk, boxed rockers, core support and inner fenders look great. It does have the 4 speed hump in the floor pan. The car has a little rust at the usual spots. The front fenders at the bottom have a spot about the size of a silver dollar. Only the right quarter has a little rust at the bottom and at the wheel well lip. The car comes with a lot of NOS parts. I will list some of what I saw. Cowl hood, flapper door, L&R fenders, L&R inner fenders, L&R door skins, R quarter & outer wheel well, complete set wheel well trim, window trim, windshield trim, bezels, marker lamps, SS emblems, mirrors, complete cowl induction setup and many more small items. These are all NOS parts not goodmark items. The motor is out of the car. The interior looks great black guts and the body does not look bad at all, no way would I replace the body parts for as little rust that there is. I would rather keep the original sheet metal.

My question is what do you think that the car and parts are worth? I would probably fix the rust spots and spot paint it. Put another BB in it get it running again for a quick sell and sell the NOS parts. I am looking at another convertible that is super clean and I do not have room for all these cars. I would most likely sell the cars that I have now and put the LS6 motor in the other convertible that I am looking at. That way I do not have to worry about ruining the value of the original convertible that I have now.
Any opinions welcome.
Thanks for any help

Not real sure on the value question. Obviously the NOS parts would probably bring stupid big money on E Bay if they are in fact NOS and not Goodmark. Have you thought about lookin' for a build sheet. My Chevelle had one under the right front corner (passenger side) of the front seat, and another one in the driver's side door panel. Since I found that one I've been able to find a sheet in the door panel of several others I've looked at by looking down in the crack with the window down. Sayin' the car was originally an LS5 and proving it may make a lot of difference in value when it's time to sell it.

2BlueLS6’s,

The parts are in fact NOS parts the GM stickers are on the parts and some are in GM wrappers.
The hoods you can tell from underneath if they are repro or GM. This was off the cuff and a last minute deal. The guy that took me over was getting ready to go to work so I did not want to press his time. Parts were in the attic and basement. I looked at all the big items but I was told that there were many other items. I hate to look too much farther then under the seat as I do not feel comfortable doing so on someone else’s car. I think it has been a weekend car for a long time. It is very clean on the bottom; the floors are painted not undercoated so they are easy to see. I know it will not bring a lot not being original. That is why I was trying to get a fell for what it is worth even if it is called a clone or SS with non matching motor if I do not find any paper work.
Thanks for your help

What's he want for it?

Two things I suggest. 1.Does it have a clamped on rag joint connector to the steering shaft (BB) pressed on (SB). 2. There should be a brass brake line intersect connection mounted to the front side of the drivers side frame cross member, just forward of the differential (where the brake line runs through the frame to meet the differential)

Always get under the back of the car and check to see if the lower control arms are boxed (four sides with metal). This is not a guarantee but many (most) clone builders do not replace this and it is a sure sign the car was not an SS if the control arms are not boxed. The difference in price between an LS6 and a Malibu (SS Cloan) is huge. It's a real quick test.

If the car was an A/C car then it's definitely not an LS6, could be an LS5, but without the original engine or paper work, there's no way to tell. What are they asking for it??

As far as the build sheet in the door, you can usually see it if it's there by rolling the window down, pulling on the inside of the door a little with your hand, then shinging a flashlight down. If it's there then you could ask to remove the door panel. It may be an individual plant thing and vary with where the car was built, but I've seen several door panel ones around here. My 70 Chevelle had a second one in the door, but the El Camino seemed not to. The only one found in the Camino was under the seat.

I will have to take a longer look at it. I know it was not an LS6 as soon as I saw it because it was a factory air car. He just has a factory crate LS6 motor that goes with it.

2BlueLS6's, Thanks for the tip and I will look.

The pricing that am looking for is lets just say it is a good clone with all the right items. That is why I wanted to get an idea of a price from some of you guys.

There are a few items that I will keep and he does not want to separate them. I will be looking to turn the car and other parts quick because I have no more space for all this.

Thanks for all the help

mr 4 speed,
Thanks for your reply. That is what I am looking for. I wanted to even price it as a good clone so I would have a quick sell as I do not have room to store it. Did you consider all the NOS parts? I think I will keep the LS6 motor and put another 454 in it to sell.

I didn't consider the NOS parts
With all the crazy pricing these days, who knows.
Figure if you get the car at the right price, the NOS are just a bonus

He told me he had about $8000.00 dollars worth of GM parts and I think that would be at GM retail pricing. I guess he would buy certain parts at a time and this has been over a long period of time.
