This is my '72 Valiant. A couple of weeks ago I installed a new front u-joint. I still notice a little tick, tick as I slowly pull into the garage. Today I had it up on a lift and checked both u-joints are OK, but there seems to be considerable play in the splined slip joint into the transmission. A couple of questions:
Is the transmission shaft heat-treated and harder than the yoke? Do these things normally wear out and need replacement (205,000 miles on these)? I guesss I assumed that the splines are lubed by trans fluid since there is a seal and the manual says raise the rear of the car to avoid fluid leakage. So I didn't grease the internal splines in the yoke when I reinstalled it.
Its a 904 Torquflite transmission. Thanks.
