I need to remove the door panels on my 71 Chevelle and have now problems removing the the door handle but the window crank seems to have a spring type thing holding it on not he U shaped clip. Can anyone provide detailed instructions on how to remove them?

Go to your local autoparts store. There is a special tool that is made just for this job. Its made from thin metal and has a U shaped channel on the end. You slip it between the door panel and the window crank and it will release the clip thats holding the window crank on its shaft.

I bought the tool yesterday. The tool goes behind the handle and I can see the spring like clamp compress back but the handle isn't any looser. Is there a trick once the spring is pushed back outward towards the door?

Wiggle the tool around a little and try putting it in from both sides. Both the knob side and then from the other way. The original way the clip was installed was from the oposite side of the knob. But some guys will put it on from the knob side so you need to come from the other direction.

This is a horse shoe shaped clip and you are going to push it out. Believe me, you usually don't have to work at getting the handle off. The clip in fact usually flies off across the car or shop for you to find it later while sweeping.

As MARTINSR said, be sure that the clip is completely removed from behind the handle, not just loose or it may still be keeping the handle from sliding off. ;)

I saw the horseshoe shaped clip on the door handle. That came off with no problems. The one on the window crank seems to be some of large spring.

I Look closer and you should see the clip also. That spring was added to the window crank to protect the door panel from the rubbing of the handle by pushing a plastic wear plate out against the handle and away from the surface of the door panel. ;)
