Did the quick ratio upgrade (gearbox from a 92 Caprice) and it has a small leak at the front wear the ragjoint is. Wanted to know where to look for a repair kit to fix the leak...
btw Car is a 68 Malibu.

That is the tricky seal... so far I have been all through the other end of the steering box but have not broken into the top half. From what I have been able to figure out to do that seal you have to dissassemble the steering input shaft and control valve in all it's glory with lots of tolerances, torques, and special tools. If you do not get it all put back together *just* right the steering locks at full right or full left or just generally not where you want it.
Not at all like the output shaft where you just use steering pressure to blow the seals out and pound some new ones in.
I am interested to see what responses you get from those more in the know, I may have to do the same thing soon myself... I would also add if there is a source of parts like the larger torque rods to reduce initial steering boost?

The following info below is from JIML82, a member here and one that is "in the know" when it comes to these gear boxes. I posted the stuff above because AutoBone looks at me like I am crazy.... I'll try NAPA next...

Is this some type of o-ring or seal that can be changed or am I screwed on the whole deal? Thanks for your help.

Rich,
There is a lip seal that seals on the input shaft. It can either be leaking where the lip meets the shaft or it could be leaking past the outside diameter of the seal where it presses into the adjuster plug.
Also, it could be the o-ring that is on the outside of the adjuster plug. Or lastly, check your hose ports and make sure that the leak isn't coming from the hose or port and leaking down and around the adjuster nut.
Here is a link to two papers with pictures on repair of the Saginaw gear. You want #6 on Pic 2. And #12 on Pic 4. It also may be helpful to refer to a Chevrolet shop manual on power gear repair as well.

I am sure that there are repair kits available at automotive stores and at dealerships for the seal and o-rings. Just make sure that they know that you have a Caprice gear and not your original.

Thanks, I am assuming that I do not have to take it completely apart if it is an o-ring or do I?
The adjuster plug can come out without taking the rest of the gear apart.
It will certainly be a lot easier if you remove the gear from the car. Although it might be possible to do everything while leaning over the fender.
For instance, if the input shaft seal is leaking, you may want to polish any corrosion on the input shaft around where the seal lip is riding to prevent the corrosion from destroying the new seal.
