I have a 70 SS with the gauge package and need a new tachometer. Should I have mine rebuilt or buy a new repo one? Has anyone experienced with a reproduction tachometer I see the prices are around $175? And if I should have it rebuilt who should I send it to and what should I expect for a turn around time and also how much will it cost? Thanks for any help!!

it will prolly cost about the same to rebuild and may take some time, but if its a factory SS with any intention of being original do that, repros are not 100% accurate

instead of the needle moving inside a little cover in the center, on a repro the whole center turns, and the screw positions that hold the face to the rest of the components are different

other than that the repros are nice...I got one cause i don't care, sold my old busted tach on ebay for $70

I would rebuild the orginal one. I would send it to http://www.redlineg.com/. I spoke with the owner and he knows his stuff. You can even upgrade the circuitry to modern specs, at an addtional cost, but it will be just as accurate as the Auto Meter tachs.

I'm going to send my whole cluster. He's going to clean the gauges, polish the lense, and to the upgrade on the tach.

ORGINAL is ALWAYS better!

MHO if your going to keep the car as original as possible and if and when you sell it thats one more thing to point out to people, some people care about orignality and some do not, but its your call either way, the originals have screws repops are riveted, and YOU can see the differece, mike
