Hey all -

I saw this non-acid rust remover advertised in Hemmings, and checked out their website. View the slideshow - its amazing. They literally "rinse" rust off of a rear axle while its still in the car - down to bare metal, with the factory paint markings still intact.

This stuff supposedly doesn't harm rubber, plastics, and most paints. Its biodegradable, and you don't need to use gloves or worry about fumes. If this stuff really works as advertised, I will be floored. Anyone tried this stuff yet? Too good to be true?

I have not tried it but saw it at a out of town hoist place I visited.

The guy showed me samples of stuff he had used this product on and it is simply amazing and non-toxic.

Tried to buy a gallon, but he was waiting for a shipment.

Not sure about local dealers.

$20/gal isn't exactly cheap, but if it works that well I could see a place for it...

Sounds like a product I used about 10 years ago by a company called Rusteco out of Long Beach, Ca. We used them for doing motorcycle gas tanks that were severely rusted inside and no longer usable. I sent them a tank from my own bike that I was going to use for target practice the next time I went shooting and was totally amazed at how well it cleaned it up inside-I am talking stalagmites of rust- and it didn't even hurt the paint outside. Unfortunately, the company changed hands and the new owners are not as careful about protecting the outside of tanks. The last 2 I sent them returned with dents and scratches that weren't there before. Truely amazing product though.

I have used Rusteco; looks to be the same stuff. It's an enzyme that eats oxides only. I have soaked gas caps and power steering reservoir caps in it that have gaskets that got scrunched. The gaskets soften in the Rusteco and all the surface rust disappears leaving whats left of any original plating. After drying the gaskets look perfect. It leaves a film that protects the metal from further oxidation for a while, and they say it can be painted over (haven't tried that). It did destroy some yellow cad coating on some screws (must be an oxide of some type). The Rusteco is a $100 for a gallon. I'll be interested in the cheaper price next time.

I'm not sold on that rearend job. Looks to me like it had previously been cleaned, then allowed to surface rust. Take note of the exhaust system. It's getting direct spray to it, yet it's still rusty. ;)
