Can someone tell me a little about the 402 engine that was used in SS Chevelles. I was told that this engine was the substitue for 396's in the '70 model Chevelles. Are there any "big" pluses or minuses with respect to the 402? Thanks,

Beginning with the late '69 396 engines, I believe, the 396 came with a .030 overbore to make them 402's. They were still advertised and trimmed as 396's. The reason was debated at length on this site. If I remember correctly, the most believable reason had to do with emissions controls coupled with the lifting of the 400 cube GM limit on mid-size cars. You could do a search for that post. von

CCrider ( the best rendition by Herbert Ledbetter aka Ledbelly IMO), I read here that block production went askew and they had to overbore them to get everything to clean up right. Sounds quite plausible.
