: Can I use a Q-Jet from a '73 Corvette 350 on my 454 Chevelle?
Corellian Corvette Nov 30th, 05, 9:23 PM Long story short:
- Just bought a 68 Chevelle project car and I'm building a 454 for it. I want to use a Q-jet
- Edelbrock, for some reason, no longer sells the new Q-Jets. (WTF?)
- I happen to have a Q-Jet in my possesion from my '73 Corvette 350 that was stolen 2 years ago.
Now, the '73 Q-jet needs a rebuild but is otherwise a fine carb. I know the jetting is off, but assumiung I can get a reputable re-builder to put it together, is there anything about that '73 carb that would make it different from the Q-jets used in '68?
If *not* can anyone point me in the right direction for the correct jets/rods I might want to use for the 454?
Thanks!
Tom Mobley Nov 30th, 05, 10:12 PM that would be a great carb to use. you might find it a little lean since it was built at the beginning of the smopg era, but it waill be close. bolt it on, drive it, see how it is.
huffhuff Dec 1st, 05, 9:16 AM you won't hurt anything by going too small on carburation.
mr 4 speed Dec 1st, 05, 9:22 AM 70 or 71 main jet would be a good starting point.
I would just buy a rebuild kit and do it myself
Hippie Dec 1st, 05, 12:28 PM Smallblock and some big block Q-Jets were 750cfm, some 454 Q-Jets were 800cfm. With a little recalibration and tuning it should work just fine on a stock or mild 454. Have you looked into a Jet Performance Q-Jet available through Jeg's and Summit?
GRN69CHV Dec 1st, 05, 12:33 PM Q-jets off the big Buicks and Pontiacs are the 800 CFM variety also. Pretty sure these also came on Caddy's.
Mike Feudo Dec 1st, 05, 12:52 PM Same basic carb just watch the choke set up. Depending on the combo most big blocks like a good sized main jet and a 48 or so pri rod. The sec rod will need to be smaller but if you can find some parts it's easy to do.
69-CHVL Dec 1st, 05, 1:37 PM I was just looking at a Eddy Q-jet, and it says it has an adjustable idle/cruise mixture. Is this true?
Tom Mobley Dec 1st, 05, 1:51 PM depends on the metering rods installed. the later style "K" series performance rods are stepped from cruise to power tip, no amount of adjusting them up and down will make much diff. earlier Qs had series "B" rods for perf engines, they're tapered and will adjust the cruise mix if the adjustment works right. you can do the same thing by careful combinations of rods and jets usually.
Mike Feudo Dec 1st, 05, 4:13 PM The 73 should have B series rods in it but it can be hard to find any. The stuff Edelbrock has the wrong power tip diameter (too big)
If you want to try an 800cfm qjet, you might be able to get once from Autozone or HiLo for cheap. Ive bought two 750s with no exchange for around $100 from Autozone, I was suprised how cheap they were.
Corellian Corvette Dec 1st, 05, 9:29 PM It looks like those Jet Perf. carbs are fairly resonably priced if the rebuilds are good.
I notice they have a 750 Stage 2, but the 800 is for a "truck". Should I care about that?
