Hello,

On of the gas tank supports on my 66 is in need of replacement. I think I can use a die grinder and get it off with no problem. The real dilemma is that I have no welder. J.C. Whitney sells aluminum rods that can be used for welding with a propane torch. I'm wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this and whether I should trust something as important as a gas tank support with a weld using something like this? If not, are there any other alternatives? I suppose I could look for a mobile welding service but I'm sure that would be expensive. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

How about bolting it in? If it can't be done with the piece you have, make a new larger piece that would allow you to bolt it.

Ken,
Either bring it over to my house or you're welcome to borrow it. I've got a Hobart 175 Mig (220v) sitting in my garage waiting on you. Email me...

Ken. The aluminum rods and propane are not for a welding type repair. It is more like brazing, but not that strong because of the aluminum. I would not advise using it for this kind of repair.

Please, for God's sake, be careful around a gas tank with any kind of flame or sparks.

Thanks for your concern, Bob. The gas tank has already been drained and removed and is safely located AWAY from the car. I also blocked off the fuel line to avoid getting any garbage in there.
