Hello everyone!

I have a 1972 Chevelle 402 ss car. It has the numbers matching engine and transmission, but I am wondering about the rear end. It is a 12 bolt posi rear, and the casting date on the housing is may of 71. My car's cowl tag date is 07C (72) and the cast date on the engine is may 25, 72, stamped june 1, 1972. The stamped code on the rear end is CCF 2 17 2, and the original owner of the car claims it stands for 3:31 12 bolt posi 402 car, stamped feb. 17, 1972. Does anyone know 71-72 rear end codes? The build sheet does say it came with a 3:31 posi rear. I looked on some websites and none give info. for 1972, and none that I found gave Chevelle rear axle info. for 1971. Let me know if any of you have any information you're willing to share! Thank you!

CCF 2 17 2
CF is used on 65 through 72 3.31 posi according to my GM documentation. Many times I've seen Chevelle rears with the 'extra' C for Chevrolet either before the 2-letter code (e.g. CCF) or after (e.g. RVC).

Did you get the casting date from the support web next to the cover opening? An April 14th '71 date looks like this photo
http://nastyz28.com/pictures/reardate.jpg

CCF 0217 2 is a 70 3.31 posi Feb 17th 2nd shift
A 71-72 would be CFC 217 2, 3.31 posi 217th day of year(about Aug 5th)
2nd shift
Something looks misread? The year is ony shown in the casting date.

Ok, I found out the casting date is E 5 1, and the casting numbers are GM59 3969278NF, and the stamping on the axle tube is CCF 2 17 2. My cars cowl tag build date like I said is 07c, and the motor was cast in late may, and the tranny is cast in mid april. So, according to that info, would that be a numbers matching rear end for it? My build sheet says it came with a positraction 3:31 rear end. I tried looking up the codes, but I can't find much. This rear end also has the factory shock plates on it, which apparently can be taken off. Please help! Thank you!

The rear looks like it was made in May of 71, a year too early to be original to your July 1972 car. Everything, but the casting date (year) is correct for your car. I would use it. 1971 and 1972 used the same casting number and assembly code formats.

What do you mean by shock plates? Does it have air shock shields, and does it have it jounce bumper adapters? If so, it could originally be out of an El Camino or wagon, or could your car have orginally been equipped with optional air shocks?

Hi Bruce-

I heard that the rear ends made for 72 (12 bolt posi's) were really rare to come across. Most were produced in 1970, and more in 71 than 72. Yes, the rear was cast in may, but maybe they didn't have a car to put it in since it's stamped feb. 17, 1972 (when they know how to build it, for what car, etc). Usually, everyone I talk to says theres approximately a 3-4 month interval before the build date of the car and rear. Anyone agree disagree? Thanks!

The rear end is not dated Feb 17, 1972. The format in 71 and 72 was the 217 day of the year, 2nd shift. So the rear end was assembled approximately the end of July, 1971 (most likely, considering the casting date).

I think the previous posts (see shooter) indicate the difference in coding the 70 versus the 71-72, you must have misunderstood. :)

Uh oh, I just noticed that you have CCF not CFC. The CCF should go with a 4 digit code like 0217 and CFC would go with the 3 digit code 217. CCF is a 1970 format and should have the 4 digit code 0217, not 217. I agree with Shooter that this doesn't look quite right. Sorry, about the confusion.

I see what you mean. The only thing that confuses me is that it's cast in the middle of 1971, when the housing was made. How could it be a rear end made for a 70? They were made before 71 for a 70 car. I guess I just don't quite understand why the code I have is a 70 and the casting is in the middle of 71. I looked at it again, and I'm not misreading any numbers......Thanks! Let me know what you think.

Hello-

I'm positive the code isn't a restamp. I am looking for a rear that will match my 72 ss chevelle, since everything else is numbers matching including the 402 big block. I dont know much about how these rears code, etc. Thanks
