: Stopping problem
driver Nov 28th, 05, 12:53 PM It's my 72 nova that has four wheel disc with four pistons on each wheel. The brakes are wilwood.Last time out I ran 132 mph and thought I wasn't going to get it stopped.Today I bleed the system for the 3rd time which no air found in the lines.I took off the front wheels and checked the pads which show very little wear and the rotors look real good.Seems to have lots of line psi because when bleeding the fuild shot hard and far.The brakes release good but noticed when pedal pushed down pads don't seem to move much.Everthing seems to be spaced correct.Any thoughts where to begin or what might be causing the problem?THANKS,BILL

Rick T Nov 28th, 05, 5:44 PM hmm, possibly a problem with the pedal geometry?
driver Nov 28th, 05, 5:51 PM Thought about that.I read the pedal is to be 6-1 on manual dsc/disc but to be honest i don't totally understand what that means?I have some ideas??
THANKS,BILL
Xtreme70SS396 Nov 28th, 05, 5:59 PM Did you replace/bleed the master cylinder?
I'd think the pedal is not pushing the plunger in correctly (far enough), there is air in the master cylinder and/or there may be a problem with the master cylinder.
driver Nov 28th, 05, 6:05 PM Did not bleed or replace the m/c.Did bleed the brakes.Don't no much about the m/c on the car since it was already on the car when i got it.It could be the wrong m/c or it's bad.I have been on master brakes web site looking at their tech form and got some good info and Im thinking incorrect m/c.
70SS540 Nov 28th, 05, 11:45 PM Are you running any assist?? vacuum booster?? if so do you have enough vacuum?? If not, do you have the correct master cylinder for non assist?? Looks like your running pretty fast. Must have some pretty good HP. Is the pedal real hard or mushy? Do you have an adjustable porportioning valve in-line??
driver Nov 28th, 05, 11:54 PM No power brakes/manual four wheel disc brakes.Pedal is a little hard.I was thinking incorrect m/c.M/C was on the car when i bought it so i don't know much about it.I was thinking of ordering a m/c thru master brakes after visiting their web sit. Thanks, bill
Xtreme70SS396 Nov 29th, 05, 12:30 AM I don't quite know what else to tell you here...
Just because you have fluid shooting far doesn't mean your m/c is working ok.
Likewise, it doesn't mean it's the wrong m/c either, could just be a bad m/c, incorrect pedal adjustment, sticking wheel pistons (doesn't seem likely though), etc.
For the speed you're getting (I certainly HOPE that's in the 1/4 mile, looks like from the setup seen in your photos - AWESOME by the way!) I can't believe you're not running power-assisted brakes anyway. Don't know how much street use it sees, but that's just crazy if it does. I guarantee every OTHER driver on the road will think you can stop, and act as if you can.
I would seriously consider taking it to a shop that can adequately analyze the system as a whole. You will be glad you did!
driver Nov 29th, 05, 2:08 AM Very little to -0 street time. I'll get it figured out Im sure.I do think it's the m/c being wrong or just no good.I'll buy a new one making sure it is the correct one and take it from there. My mph was down on that pass I'm looking for a 136-138 mph now that i got the bugs out of it and yes thats in the 1/4.
Thanks for the advise.BILL
gchandler Nov 29th, 05, 3:37 AM In my experiance the wilwood drag race disks brakes do not stop the car that well.
Maybe they are working, but do not provide the stopping power that you are looking for. It is my understanding that the 4 piston super lights are designed with low drag and low weight in mind, not stopping distance.
I would say that they stopped the car that I drove about on par with stock drums that are setup correctly.
I don't want to sound like I am bashing Wilwoods brakes, I think that they make some good stuff and I run wilwood disks on all 4 corners of my '64 chevelle and it stops hard enough to give you seatbelt burn.
Just my $.02
driver Nov 29th, 05, 7:29 AM Thanks for the info. I would go with the power brakes but I know I don't have the vacUum to get them to work and it would get into some $$$$ to
get them to work.By the time you added up the m/c,booster and electric pump I would be at $1,000. I guess it comes down to how bad does one want to stop? Thanks,BILL I just checked it out it would cost$879.80 plus tax and shipping.
POWERBRAKEBOB Nov 29th, 05, 11:16 PM Have You Seen The Hydroboost System In The January Super Chevy? It Runs Off Of The Power Steering Pump And Needs No Vacuum. It Also Clears The Valve Covers On Even The 572. Check Out The Website "powerbrakesonline.com" The Grand Nationals Can Pull 10lbs Of Boost On The Line With The Hydroboost Becasue The Pump Is Spinning Faster.

What pads do you run?
driver Nov 30th, 05, 6:43 AM Thanks I'll check it out.The pads are tan(wilwood).I was thinking about the pads this morning wondering if there would be a better choice of pads?THANKS,BILL Wilwood has so many choices of pads who knows? I was wrong about my brakes being four pistons/they are two pistons which i think are for race cars 2,400 lbs or less which I'm sure my nova is 3,200 plus.So i don't know what I'm going to do at this point.
