: 99 Silverado, one wiper does not move

I was raining like crazy alst night when I got home, so I was running the wipers, however during the night it froze so my wipers were stuck to the windshield. So when I started my truck this morning the wipers tried to wipe but were stuck, then the right one broke free, and something let loose in the drivers side, and now only the passenger side wipes. Problem is that we are expecting heavy snow this afternoon, so I would really like to have my wipers for the trek home. Does anyone have any words of wisdom before I tear into this thing.

Hi Mat,

I went through something very similar in my 02 silverado - except fortunately, it was the driver's side that still worked. I ended up having to replace the whole wiper motor assembly, since I could not find parts for its internals, and I needed to replace it in a HURRY like you did. Quick R&R, but not cheap.

good luck.

Had the same thing happen on my 99 Silverado, except it was the passenger side. Basically, the post that the arm is bolted to has splines ... whereas the matching socket on the arm does not. I belive the "socket" is a softer metal, and the splines act as teeth and "dig in" when you tighten the bolt. Before you replace the motor, remove the arm and start up the wipers to see if the post rotates back and forth. If it does, you might try a little loctite on the post and socket, and re-snug the post.

Had somthing similar happen on my 2001 S-10. I'm not sure if its the same design, but all I had to do was pop the plastic cover off the base of the wiper arm and tighten the nut that holds the arm to the post. The nut somehow worked itself loose and caused the arm so slip on the splines.

Thanks for the help guys, hopefully it will be simple, and thankfully the snow is just blowing now, so I should be ok to get home. I just went out and looked, and the shaft is still turning, so hopefully it will be an easy, cheap fix.

Thought I would update on my wipers, it ended up that the splines on the wiper arm stripped. So I took some red loctite and then tightened the crap out of the retaining nut, and so far it all seems to work fine. This fix should last until I can get a new wiper arm bought.

This is something that happens a lot more then just GM trucks. Almost all cars have the splined wiper arms. Usually, just a tightening of the nut on top is all it takes. Common when people try to wipe a foot of snow off thier cars in the winter instead of getting thier butts out with a scraper and brushing it off the proper way. Its the price you pay when living in certain climates.
