Anyone have any experience with the Classic Performance Products 12 volt vacuum pump. I need a pump for my 69 Chevelle. Ive got a 71 454 with an aggressive cam and can't get the vacuum at the intake manifold above 12 hg. which is not enough to operate my brake booster.

Or if you know of any other pumps that might work better.

Thanks

12" of Vacuum doesn't sound to bad though. Before I'd put a pump on it I would look at one of these systems. just a thought

Thanks Dave. The Hydroboost looks like a nice option. Nice "instructional web site also. A little pricey for me right now. I believe the pump may be a little less expensive.

I agree 12" doesn't sound too bad. Can you run an auxillary canister? I had a pump and it was very noisy and in the way.

jr.... Not sure what you have around you in the way of salvage yards but some GM 82-90's cars(sunbirds, cavaliers, celebrity, j2000, j6000) had supplemental electric vacuum pumps. They are also occassionally available on the net. The A1 Cardone part 64-1500 is no longer available at least anywhere that I could find. Summit and Jegs have supplemental pumps for about 250.00+. I found a GM one and mounted it under my master cylinder on a bracket I had fabricated. Doesn't look bad either. Pete

I use a vacuum pump from a turbo Volvo in our road race car. It provides about 20" of vacuum to the reservoir - works like a trained pig. If you get the entire mounting system with all the rubber parts they are very quiet.

Any specific year or model to look for? Pete

I think it was an 86. Any of the mid-late 80's turbo models have vacuum pumps.

Thanks guys. I thought about a canister, but cannot seem to find any technical information about how much vacuum it will hold and how it works. The canister is the lowest cost alternative. Any guidance on the canister would be appreciated. In the meantime, I think I will start looking for a volvo pump or possibly one from the 80's X bodies mentioned.

By the way Pete, I am assuming a trained pig is an excellent worker!!!

The Hydroboost System Runs Off Of The Power Steering Pump, And Needs No Vacuum. The Hydroboost Can Deliver Up To 2000psi To The Calipers, And Clears The 572 Valve Covers. It Just Solves All Those Old Brake Problems Without The Expense Of The Aftermarket Calipers. The Stall Speed Of The Converter Will Exceed The Rated Stall, As The Pump Spins Faster, Locking The Hydroboost Down Harder. Those Vacuum Pumps Still Cannot Out Flow The Volume Of Air That A Big V8 Can Suck. Thye Are Only Good For One Application, And Are Noisy. Check Out "powerbrakesonline.com"
