Folks,

I'm new to the site, and new to Chevy's (was a Pontiac Firebird guy for a long time) and have a generic question. I just bought a '66 Chevelle SS 396 clone. It has a 454 CE block, which I was told was a "replacement" motor, whatever that means. I need to do some tuning and get some parts but have no clue how to verify what will work on a CE block. Anyone now how to decode the year and how to verify what parts I can use?

Thanks.

need to post the casting number from the back of the block..and the casting date, also on the back of the block. As for the CE motor..C..is for Chevrolet..E..engine assembly followed by numbers 1234567. The first number is the year 0-70..9-69..8-68, 1-71 etc. CE blocks were no different than any production motor. Verify the year and your all set.

Thanks AL for the info. I'll check it out and repost the numbers.

I got one set of numbers off of the block on the driver's side. I had to use an inspection mirror to see them so I hope I got it right. It read :

GM15

14015445

I guess the date code must be on the other side? I go after that when it is warms up a bit. Sure wish I had a heated garage.

14015445 comes up as a 78-90 454 block.
What is the complete stamping sequence from the pad in front of the passenger head?
Also check for any stampings on a second pad, top front of engine, above the timing chain cover.
There is one possibility of CE+7digits when used as a partial vin is a 84 truck...
and some truck 454's of that era have the engine ID code located above the timing cover....
