: Expert appraisal & documentation of 66 L78
66L78RAT Nov 24th, 05, 5:37 AM Ive owned my all ORIGINAL 66 L78 chevelle since 1988.Factory AA tuxedo black paint still looks good,#s matching 396,m21,3.73 12 bolt, tach, gauges, buckets, console.Everything is obviously original to this car(even idler, carb,ex.man)I could not find a build sheet anywhere & dont have any other paperwork. The vin is stamped on the block & orig broaching marks are still evident on the pad. Before I "DEVIRGINIZE" my baby I want the car authenticated for what it is.Any suggestions? Car was built at KAN plant- I here they didnt put build sheets in the cars built there?
I had Jerry MacNeish do an authentication and document a 69 Chevelle for me. He is a Camaro expert, but he also knows the Chevelles. www.z28camaro.com is his site. Mabey you could email him and see what he says. Good luck.
66L78RAT Nov 24th, 05, 6:01 AM Just wanted to add that I live in Detroit area.I had my 65 malibu ss conv." EXPERTLY" appraised by a well known local muscle car dealer & the guys first response was "NICE CAR - IS IT A 63!!??!!!??" A car is only original once so I want the car ABSOLUTELY authenticated before its loooong awaited restoration.
I would say Jerry is your man then. He does the "fine tooth comb" with all the numbers.
66L78RAT Nov 24th, 05, 7:30 AM Tony, thanks for the info. I checked out his site & going to email him.I see he is in Maryland.Anyone know who is a well known chevelle "GURU" in Detroit.

CT Mark Nov 24th, 05, 9:36 AM I'd also have Mike Crown look at your documentation (engine pad, trim tag, etc.)...if you haven't already done so. His opinion is often sought by '66 collectors when considering a sale or purchase. www.mysterychevelle.com (http://www.mysterychevelle.com)
Sounds like a great car!
DUKE 69 Nov 24th, 05, 9:45 AM I second the "vote" for Mike Crown. He has spent a tremendous amount of time putting together a CD about 66's and he can certainly help you. If it were mine, I wouldn't do anything before talking to him.
Doug Garland Nov 24th, 05, 7:38 PM You call Mike, and he will be drooling in anticipation. He WANTS an original '66 L-78, and Black is one of his favorite colors. So expect him to try to purchase it from you! He is in Philly.
66L78RAT Nov 24th, 05, 8:40 PM Thanks for the info guys.Ive owned the car for 17 years and it aint goin nowhere!!Ive been collecting nos trim & other pieces for the last 15 years waiting for the right time to restore her.I will be selling my 67SS project to help finance the resto on the 66.
ACES-70 Nov 25th, 05, 7:53 AM I agree, Mike is the number 1 66 guy in the country as far as Im concerned, he has forgot more about 66 Chevelles than most other "experts" know, he also keeps himself fresh with the market , he would be my choice, and if you let him know it is not for sale at any price, he will respect that and just help you with the car,, Mike is good people
