I stripped my car to bare metal a while ago, since it has been in a dry barn until I can finish the body work. there is no real rust that i found when i stripped it. question is since it has been sitting there, there are some places that have developed surface (flash) rust (very Minimal). Do I have to treat this w/ a chemical before applying filler or primer or just DA w/ 40 grit? The rust is very minimal and the DA takes care of it, but I don't know if it is still lurking there even though i can't really see it.
Thanks for the help!

Yes, there is a treatment solution for it, but I can't recall what it is offhand. I think MARTINSR covered this in one of his posts a while back. You sand the rust, wipe the metal down with this compound and then spray etching primer. I'll try to find out exactly what the compound is called and get back with you, or maybe one of the members will chime in and help us out.

I just went through the same thing. I don't recall what the exact name of it was, but I went to the paint store and bought some "Metal Conditioner". Don't be alarmed when applying this, you actually wash the car down with this using a scratch pad. The strange thing was the chemical in this turned the metal, I believe it was a greenish color. Like I said don't be alarmed it's supposed to do that.
Good luck

I did a search and found basically two opinions. One was a product called M-S 6878 that I think MARTINSR had recommended, and some seemed to think DA w/ 80 or 40 grit is enough. I went over mine with a 80 grit but there was still some very minor discoloration. Does anybody know anything about this M-S 6878? What brand is it? Also I am using etching PPG primer which people seemd to think would convert any minor surface rust left after sanding. My main worry is the areas where I am applying mud on bare metal. Thanks for any info about M-S 6878.

I think the brand for the M-S 6878 is Martin Senour (strangely enough suggested by MartinSR- Hmmm). http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
