Are the 70-72 Monte front bumper brackets the same as Chevelles?

I don't see how they could be, the bumpers are different, right?

The bumpers are not that much different that I can see. Just around the parking lamps. That is a good question on the bumper brackets? Front frame horn section is longer though.

The reason that I ask us because they look very simular in design with the exception of the turn signals. Could they be the same as the El Camino?

I would guess they are the same. 70 monte and 70 elky are the same front bumper and 72 monte is the same as 71-2 chevelle. 71 monte is the same design as the 71-2 chevelle but with cutouts for the turn signals.

I was going to guess "no" yesterday. I really don't know, but I'm pretty sure that the Monte is longer in the front due to the length of the fan shroud.

I used to think that the Chevelle and Monte also had the same frame, not sure though.

If they have the same frame and the same front bumper, but different length fan shrouds, then I'd have to guess that the difference in length is compensated for by means of different length bumper brackets or different length frame horns or mounting the bumper brackets in different locations on the horns.

I know that's no help, but I'm curious too. Maybe the radiators are mounted in different locations, that could also explain the different fan shroud lengths.

I have a 70 Monte with the front bumper removed. The brackets are bolted to the horns.
If you want some measurements I'll be happy to check.

Glenn, from what I understand the Monte and Grand Prix frames are longer in the front from the crossmember forward to accomidate the long hood design. I didn't think you could prep a Monte/GP frame and bolt on a Chevelle body. Don't know this to be fact, however. I never gave thought to a longer bumper bracket in front. If you could confirm the length it would be great!
My Chevelle was bought as a roller several years ago and it came with smooth front and rear bumpers. The no bolts look is nice but I've tired of the painted bumper look. Going back to chrome and don't want to cut the brackets off the existing set up. A friend has located a 71 Monte parts car and says the fromt bumper is straight and looks good. I can't use the bumper but the brackets might work. I've never considered the use of Monte bumper brackets on my Chevelle.

Thanks,

I just measured the driver's side. I hooked a tape at the rearmost point, where the two sections are interlocked by a tongue with a bolt going thru both pieces and into the horn. On the front I plumbed down with a 2' level, so the dimensions are taken fairly level to the floor from the back to the front of the brackets.

Inside bracket: 13 7/8"
Outside bracket: 18 5/8"

If you need any other measurements let me know.

Thanks for that info Glenn. Tomorrow morning I'll measure the ones that are welded on my bumpers to see if they are the same size.

Glenn, drptop70ss, it looks like the brackets on my Chevelle are the same lengths as you described in your post. When this rain stops i'll drive out to see if the bolts match up to the bumper. Can's see why the General would have made them different.
Thanks,

Monte, Chevelle, and El Camino front bumper mounting brackets should inner change without a problem. The 70 Monte is built on a 4 door Chevelle frame.
