: Shifter Hump Location
I need location dimensions for the shifter opening of a 68-69 non-console 4 speed car (with original hump/floor pan). I'm replacing my incorrectly located existing hump with a repro hump in the correct location. Mine had a generic Hurst shifter mounting bracket and a replacement floor pan/shifter hump. I now have the correct shifter mounting bracket and this requires relocating the opening. I need the measurement from the plate that attaches the accelerator pedal to the firewall, to the centerline of the shifter opening. Also the measurement from the centerline of the driveshaft tunnel to the centerline of the shifter opening.

Please? Probably the same on 68-72. ANYONE have one?

I can't give you dimentions, but here is what I can give you. If you have an original shifter, or the CORRECT Hurst shifter for a 68-72 Chevelle, you can locate the hump nearly perfectly.
Place the shifter handle in the neutral position, place the hump on the tranny tunnel with the shifter handle centered left-right/front-rear in the square opening and you will be nearly dead-on. Also, you will discover that the hump probably fits the tranny tunnel just right. Once you have the hump positioned, draw a line around the repo hump on the floor, and cut out a hole about 3/4 to 1in INSIDE the line. That's the way the factory hole is cut in the tranny tunnel.
I special ordered a new 4sp, bench seat car in 72, lost it in a divorce and my ex eventually gave what was left to one of my sons. I found a 71 car for him a few years ago, we stripped EVERYTHING from my old car and put it on his 71. I removed the bench hump from the 72, cleaned it up and located it in the 71 as I described and everything works just great.

Tom, Yes I now have the correct Hurst shifter for mine with a Muncie handle mated to it. I have located the centered position as you decribed but just want to know where the factory put the opening.

DZAUTO Nov 6th, 00, 3:46 PM When I had my 72 with a bench, with the shifter handle, in neutral, the handle came through the square bezel hole about dead center, left-right/front-rear. Therefore, when we pulled all that stuff from my old 72 to install in my son's 71, it just kind of fell into place and the shifter is in the center of the hole.

68-bb Nov 6th, 00, 4:58 PM I just did mine last year and it had to go in place just as Tom had said. The only thing I would like to add is that when you order your carpet make sure they know your car is a non console four speed. If they say it doesnt matter you may want to consider another supplier.

brndout69SS Nov 6th, 00, 7:01 PM Ok I just made measurments of mine. If you take the seat mounting holes and use a good straight edge. Measure from center of the lead mounting hole it should come up to 22 15/16.That is the center of the hump. From the straight edge measure up toward the front the center measurement of the hump should be 8 7/8 if the reproduction is 5 15/16 square. Hope this helps.
Thanks. brndout69SS, Did you mean the center of the opening, side to side, is 8 7/8" from the lead seat mount hole, if the seat mount hole location is projected straight forward?

brndout69SS Nov 7th, 00, 3:08 AM Von the first 22 15/16 mearsurement is from the side. Then if you had a square you would measure up toward the front to get the 8 7/8 center mark.
DRM69SS Nov 7th, 00, 4:49 AM Von, i'm in the same situation. My 69 was orig a TH400. I put a 4sp in and the hurst shifter & handle came through the 'hole' someone before me made, however i've been staring at it for 2 months because it just doesn't look like it comes out where it should be.i know the OEM shifter handles have a kink in them to get inside the console. but mine is way off. to far forward in the car. i'm curious what muncie handle you used with the hurst shifter? if you changed the hump(and seats) could you put a console in? also, is the shifter mounted to the tranny towards the front of the tailshaft or more towards the rear(u-joint)? thanks for the help
DRM69SS, I used a Muncie handle from a '70 with bench seat. I had to cut off the bend at the bottom (mounts horizontally to stock shifter) and drill two holes to attach it to the Hurst. I think you can install a console if you get a repro hump for a console car (different than non-console car). The Hurst shifter mounts toward the rear of the tailshaft, to the cast bosses there.
