Maybe a magnet could be used to hold it shut.

Rick,
I am in the middle of that project as we type. I have installed the piano hinge (21.00 at Graingers) and have welded it to the top. I am going to Line-X my bed and don't want any bolt heads showing. I also welded some 1" square steel stock under the "lid" both for ridgitity (sp?)and to mount two gas shocks from an Explorer hatch. I bought 2 magnets from the cabinet hardware section at Lowes. I am getting the bed sprayed next week. By the way, if you are going to remove the stock bracing that is spot welded to the "floor". Don't just cut it out with a torch, get a spotweld cutter for a cleaner result. I'll post pictures (if I can figure out how) in about 10 days.

Mark, do you think the magnets will really be strong enough to hold the lid shut???
Sound like we are doing the same thing.I going to spray my bed also, using the SEM brand liner from Eastwood.Going to tint to the car color  I already sprayed the under side with it also.Looks,
On your hinge did ya get a stainless steel one or what?

Rick,
I think the magnets will hold just fine. If they don't, I'll get a weaker gas strut. I think the top will naturaly want to stay down, only the strut will be trying to push up on it. Also, the magnets will keep it from vibrating. I did not go the stainless steel route with my hinge for two reasons. 1) I plan on Rhino spraying most of the hinge so it blends with the rest of the bed, I'll POR the actual part that connects. 2) I wasn't sure when I started this project, that it would work! The plain hinge was $21.00, the same size stainless was $78.00 and was not in stock. I am going to have the bed sprayed black, the red they have looks gaudy. I'll have it sprayed by the middle of next week, I'll let you know how it works. Have you started on yours yet? Also, the magnets I bought are like on a cabinet door, you actually push in and the door pops out, that way no handles!!
