Well, it looks like you can spend anything you want on a harmonic balancer from $50 to $500. Doug Herbert has a "Professional Products" one for $57.99, Salee Cheverolet has a "GM licensed - Proform" one for $49.00 or you buy one for $270-$400 from Summit. What's the deal? Is the $49 one ok or not?

Anybody have a recommendation? Doesn't look like GM Parts Direct has one for a '72 400SB. This is very confusing.

This is a weekend cruiser, not a NASCAR or NHRA machine.

The letters "SFI" will increase the cost quite a bit. If you don't need an SFI balancer (SFIs are a good idea if you plan to race it a lot) you can save some money and have a decent balancer. I would avoid anything with the brand name "Proform" associated with it whether it is GM endorsed or not (just my opinion). Pioneer balancers can usually be had for around $100 or less and I'm told they are a very well made unit. If available, an original GM unit will usually cost about the same.

GM Parts Direct DOES have the balancer you need, #6272225. A very reasonable price too! You need to look in the Performance parts section.

As stated before and also stated on GM Parts Direct's site, you must also use the correct externally balanced flywheel or flexplate (which they sell as well if you need one).

For a street balancer you just can't beat the Professional Products stuff. They even have the timing marks etched on the outer ring. Nice stuff for about $50. I have used several with great results! :thumbsup: :D

That's what I needed to hear. Rich, I tend to agree with the assessment on Proform even though I don't have any personal experience to base it on. It's just word of mouth and 50 yrs. of wrench turning "gut feeling". This old dog tends to follow my gut feelings.
