: Roll Call
69boo307 Nov 21st, 05, 9:47 AM So, how many Pro-Touring chevelle'ers do we have in these parts? I suspect some have been hiding for fear of scorn and disdain... but now they can stand proud and post up! :D Even if you're a closet pro-touring enthusiast that's still drag racing, post up! Give a little blurb about your pro-touring A-body too...
My '69 will hopefully this week be getting its engine put back between the fenders after a complete rebuild due to a wristpin that walked. It's been out of action about 2 months now.
My car isn't real pro-touring, it can't really decide what it is. It's part sunday cruiser, part NASCAR, part pro-touring. It has a sort of retro minimalist thing going. No heat, no AC, no wipers even, there's pretty much nothing on the car that doesn't contribute to driving. At the same time I've tried to retain as much of an original look as possible.
66ElkyBB Nov 21st, 05, 11:08 AM When I started converting my Elky from a correct original restoration, I wasn't sure what it would be called - still not sure if it is an official "pro touring" car or not. But, it handles incredibly well in autocross stuff, as well as drag races easily and cruises to car shows smoothly and safely. I left the external vehicle to look like a complete stocker except maybe for the 17x8 inch American TTIIs all around with Goodyear F1 GS/D3 tires. The suspension was completely changed over to Global West stuff with Del-A-Lum bushings and Koni adjustables front and reat. Larger 1 1/8 sway bar in front and none in the rear per GW recommendation. Trans is suited to just about everything - especially cruising at a high speed and not spinning the motor so much - it's a D&D Viper T56. Changed rear gears to Eaton Posi with 4.10 Richmonds. Inland Empire did me a large aluminum driveshaft with their yokes and 1350 u-joints to allow for the high speed rotation of the shaft. Disc brakes in front and the MP big finned drum police drum brakes in the rear. Engine is warmed over 396 with a custom cam from Harold, and some internal mods, but stock intake and exhaust manifolds. Exhaust in 2 1/2 inch aluminized pipe with h-pipe and 50 series Flowmasters dumping at a 45 degree angle just before the rear bumper corners. Ignition is all digital MSD with their billet HEI distributor - can adjust timing on a knob hidden in the unused ashtray. Factory AC was retained and works great here in hot florida. Quick ratio steering box from GW. Factory buckets with modified center console to accomodate the center positioned steeda shifter and a hurst lever to put the t-handle in the correct position. Used the button in the t-handle for the electric reverse lockout on the trans. That's a summary, but I was simply tired of the pure restoration scene and wanted to make the car lock stock, but handle and perform more like a new car. So far, I feel that I have succeeded, but not sure if the car is worth more or less than when I started in this new direction. To me, however, it doesn't make a difference since I can't see selling this one.
airrj Nov 21st, 05, 11:22 AM I'm here :waving:. Just got back from the Parts Peddler stock car show and I got a few new ideas. I'll post later.
And for a blurb, my car is Pro-Cheapskate. I have build a fair amount of my own parts and the rest I have bought used. It is a driver and has no imediate plans for looking much better. I've got one Autocross under the belt.
The front is B-body spindle, QA-1 coilover, C3 vette rotor CBB, and a GM 1 1/4" bar. The rear is completely stock at this point with plans being made to update it this winter. Rims and tires are Corvette Z06 with homemade adapters. Drivetrain is an old circle track street stock motor with about 325hp and a Richmond Road Race 5-speed and Long Shifter.

BB_Mike Nov 21st, 05, 12:17 PM I will be donig a frame-off over the winter. (funny how that only takes one sentence to say, but an entire season to probably not get halfway done.)
I plan to lean towards a pro-touring type suspension. I guess my interior already is a little pro-tourish.
My power plant will remain big block with a TH400. At least until something breaks. Can't upgrade until I break something. I hope they make sticky tires for the larger wheels. I"ll need to compensate for some off-the line scootage.
Derek69SS Nov 21st, 05, 2:39 PM I'm here :)

P.S.: I just had my post moved into this forum from Bench Racing, so you can see my progress on Saturday 11/19/05.
4FTTY4 Nov 21st, 05, 2:46 PM I don't have a hard core g-machine either, but hopefully one that will stop and turn better than a stock car. I have a 70 malibu with baer 13'' and 12'' discs, hotchkis TVS kit, a .030 over 454 and a TH400, and budnik wheels. I will have some pictures here in the future, it just may take a little while...
Beaux Nov 21st, 05, 3:21 PM Still trying to get off the ground with mine. Finally have my tools, compressors, and plans in place. Work starts on Jan 1. with an expected completion date (at least driveable) by Dec 7 next year (My fiances B-day, she wants it back on the road! :hurray: )
At this point it will be b-body w vette brakes up/ front - looking at the SC&C packages (spindles to change as soon as I have good solid info but I already have the B-body spindles POR'd and ready to go), 12 inch discs out back, Hotchkis springs / sways, 3.42 geared stout 12 bolt, TKO 5 spd eventually as I have a brand new M22W I am going to run for awhile, Wheels are undecided but I am looking at Bonspeed or some one off Intros from Bryan. quick ratio steering box (maybe Lee's), bilstein shocks and some semi custom interior pieces (door panels, dash, center console), boxing in the frame as RJ did above.
Mill plans at this point are a total toss up. I am either going to stretch out my original 396, all forged guts and throw a pro-charger at it or build up a 427 / 434 ci and do the same.....or commmit total blasphomy on a 70 SS and go injected / intercooled pro-charged 408 ci LS1. Have the equipment and funds for the suspension / chassis build and will decide on motor depending on finished cost / benefits of each (bang for the buck but budget oriented as well)
Im still in the infancy because I run short on time and funds quite often but those are the basics. I am still planning out the suspension specifics, watching Dereks, Troy, Denny, Gregg and a few others builds with GREAT interest.
Clint44 Nov 21st, 05, 4:12 PM My car is still a work in progress but here's where I am at,so far.

Elusive_R Nov 21st, 05, 8:14 PM Not a Chevelle, but my Elky at least has some pro-touring suspension on it. I can't afford the wheels (or paint!) just yet, but I will have a three-link/panhard bar rear suspension of my own design on it within the next two weeks. And yes, I'll post pictures and results.

Gokou Nov 21st, 05, 9:17 PM All my stuff is on the webpage in my signature.
Plans over my Christmas break is to pull the engine to install a new billet core cam and new beehive springs and also try and fit a CV Products roadrace pan around the headers, as my current Milodon "claimer" pan likes to lose oil pressure under both sustained hard turning and sustained heavy braking. That's not good and would lead to a nasty engine failure on a roadcourse...
I have a lot on the table for next year, including paint/bodywork. Priorities are better seats (probably Sparco), an intercooler, oil cooler, re-do the dash to put all the gauges in easy view and add an oil temp gauge, CCW 3-piece wheels, re-do the front suspension again to ditch the B-body spindles, and probably step up to new 6-piston Z06 brakes, and very likely a 3-link out back. Right now I'm seriously considering cutting the floor and trunk pans out and going to a Morrison Max-G chassis and welding it directly to the body for additional stiffness; I can also channel the body over the frame to get things lower without losing ground clearance (but at the expense of headroom.) As with anything though, big on ambition, a bit short on funding, shorter still on time to get it done, and very short in the welding skills department. I've managed OK so far though, so we'll see how far I get. :p
Even with the shortcomings of the current combo it's still a blast to take it out when I get home and beat the snot out of it. I've put just over 7,500 miles on it since February of this year and it hasn't missed a beat... tires and brake pads are nearly gone however, can't imagine why. ;)

Motorhead62 Nov 21st, 05, 9:47 PM I am still in debate about Pro Touring. I am a huge fan of Jeff Smith (since about 1985 or so) who I think was probably the guy responsible for starting this whole thing. :D
My Chevelle is faster, handles better, stops the same, but is cooler than when new. :)
I still need to work on the brakes. I have all the parts to install my new disc brakes. I have just been way too busy. :(
My car is equipped with Hotchkis parts such as springs, control arms and sway bars. :)
I really am not a fan of huge diameter wheels but I do like them wide with big rubber. But I have seen a couple Chevelles that were just right.
I guess my car is 1/2 Pro Touring. It is not stock and not set up for drag racing.
I do love to drag race though and I have done the Power Tour!!! :beers:
Thanks for listening. :beers: :D
Gokou Nov 21st, 05, 9:58 PM I really am not a fan of huge diameter wheels but I do like them wide with big rubber. But I have seen a couple Chevelles that were just right.
Agreed. Only big enough to clear your brakes is a good rule of thumb, keep all that rotating mass as close to the hub as you can. (although too small means too much sidewall and turn-in and steering response will suffer.) However, given the weight of our cars, large brakes are a necessity for good and repeatable braking performance and that requires larger wheels to clear the brakes. As much as I don't want to go any bigger than the 17" wheels currently on my car the next set will probably be 18" as I plan to move up to 14" rotors and thus need the 18s for brake clearance.
Another El Camino here. Lots of pics and videos of it in action on the road course in my sig.
69boo307 Nov 22nd, 05, 9:39 AM sweet, there's more of us than everyone first suspected ;)
shep_77 Nov 22nd, 05, 7:42 PM I have a 69 Malibu I have had it for 14 years it is my first car her is a pic. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d166/shep_77/car/69chevelle2.jpg The other side was wrecked in the front. I have already straightened the frame and have new sheet metal for it.
My plans for it are below
SC&C stage two Kit with stock spindles
circle track springs front and rear 700 / 175
C5\C4 disk brake upgrade front and rear (in progress of aquiring parts)
Tubular rear upper and lowers with heims and spherical bushings.
I plan on using 17 wheels with 275/40 front and rear
Paint & body same color scheme maybe black out the top to the body line.
Engine & trans currently stock 350 with a 2 barrel and a powerglide.
I plan to upgrade to some vortec heads and a TBI setup maybe mpfi if I can find the funds. I want to upgrade the tranny to a 2004r.
80superbu Nov 22nd, 05, 8:53 PM I'll be heading that direction in time. Right now just getting all the paint stripped off and ready to weld in new floors. Am buying an 01 Z28 tomorrow (LS1). Will be adding the motor, trans, front buckets (power leather) and console to the Chevelle. Hoping to turn a little profit selling of some of the leftover parts. The plans are also to put a turbo on it :)
The 4th gear OD will work fine with the 4:10 posi
Haven't decided on a paint scheme or wheel/tire combo yet. Not expecting is to be ready until the summer or so
stealth71 Nov 22nd, 05, 9:08 PM I have a work in progress but it will be going pro-touring. 18's all around, C5 13" brakes, and coilovers.

evans72chevelle Nov 23rd, 05, 2:46 PM I haven't posted in awhile, but I'm in the Pro-Touring boat, though not as hardcore as most. My oldest son's (he's almost 3 years old, he'll get the car when he's 24!) '72 Malibu has the Hotchkis TVS with the B-body spindles, 12-inch brakes, Bilsteins shocks, AGR quick ratio steering box, ProCar seats and a Momo steering wheel that I converted over from my old '90 RX-7 P.O.S!
I haven't spent much time on it as my youngest son's '70 GTO is taking up most of my precious garage time (he's almost 15 months old, he'll get his car when he's 24 years old also!). His GTO will get the same treatment and he just got his Momo steering wheel yesterday!
Derek69SS Nov 23rd, 05, 2:48 PM ProCar seats Pics??? I'm thinking about getting the Procar Rally seats for my '69
rbarnes Nov 23rd, 05, 3:20 PM I don't have a Pro-Touring car but I do appreciate the time and work not to mention money thet goes into building a car like this. My car is pretty much one of those numbers matching ones. If I had the money I would definetly like to have second car like the ones that have been posted. Awesome job guys.
D Stroud Nov 23rd, 05, 7:32 PM I'm planning to do a po mans Pro-Touring resto on my 68 Tempest Wagon.
Hadn't gotten very far yet. Plus, I've lost my darn title to the car. :(
evans72chevelle Nov 23rd, 05, 7:51 PM Hi Derek,
You may want to check out my showroom for pics. I've tried for the last hour to try to paste them on my reply WITHOUT any luck!
dirtrocker Nov 23rd, 05, 8:12 PM My 65 wagon.......... I guess you could say I'm doing the pro touring thing............ratrod..............heck I don't know LOL.
Slowly doing the suspension............. gonna sit pretty down there, getting a 406/700R4. Will have AC, pretty much stock interior.
Still on the fence wheel wise............swaying between 17" intro rodders and 16" vintiques rallys with no rings or centers.
Only wish I didn't have to paint it.............gotta love that patina :D

I'm pretty sure I'm going to spend my tax return on a pair of those seats
Mali Blu Nov 24th, 05, 1:50 AM If someone could tell me exactly what Pro Touring means,I could tell you if mine will be Pro Touring or not.
Im trying to build a get in and drive the car comfortably anywhere, anytime,as far and as long as you want everyday, with good performance and handling, but not over the top race car type performance.
Does that qualify?
Alan Nov 24th, 05, 2:45 AM I'm a Pro Tour hopeful. Not as hardcore as many of you. I lack money, time and welding skills (I have all the necessary tools though). My '71 Chevelle needs some 17" wheels (probably Budnik's and Goodyear F1 tires) to make it look like a Pro Tour car. A few years ago I installed 12" front 1LE rotors, 11" Ford Explorer rear rotors, GW front upper control arms w/Del-A-lums, converted lower stock arms to allow Del-A-Lums. Added a 1 1/4 front sway bar, no rear sway bar, and Hotchkis springs at the four corners. BMR rear upper/lower poly control arms were installed (mistake). Also stabbed a Currie 9" rear under the chassis. Bilstein shocks all around.
Plans: Swap out the rear upper/lower control arms; install a Hydra-Boost; have Lee Manufacturing rebuild/convert stock steering box to quick-ratio and rebuild the stock power steering pump; install a Denny's aluminum driveshaft; 17" wheels/tires; aftermarket A/C system.
Also thinking of dropping in an LS1 and slap a Procharger on it, and convert to a manual tranny or put an overdrive auto or add a Gear Vendors unit. Interior is bone stock and I'm undecided what I want to do. As the car sits, it's a blast. When you pass a motorcycle on a twisty road you know your car handles better than stock (or the guy on the motorcycle sucks!). I like to think the former :D
Awesome cars guys! I like this new forum.
the walrus Nov 24th, 05, 11:58 AM I'll add myself to the list too:
'70, b-body spindles, GW uppers, 1LE 12" discs front, 11" discs rear
Recieved may new sway bars last week: 1-1/4" front, 1" rear
Just pulled out the 350 for the 454 that should be going in in the spring - I know that this is kind of the wrong direction for a true 'pro-touring' set-up, but I just can't resist the allure of a big block
I'm currently test fitting a friends set of 17" wheels, by spring i hope to be rolling on the widest tires I can fit front and rear. Planning the ever popular TT2 set-up
Once this phase is compete I will start looking at a swapping out the th400 for a 5 speed manual, but that will be farther down the road.
Hope to post some pics up soon.
Really looking forward to this forum section, I'm thinking that I may start posting a little more frequently now.
72SSAbody Nov 24th, 05, 5:12 PM Another "Pro-Cheap" here. All you have to do is click my website to see what I mean ;)
The "thrill of the GM parts bin" hunt is what really gives me my fix. I would rather find a gm p/n that works than spend mucho dinero on the aftermarket parts. Or just design them myself. That's probably why the car isn't done!
So far she has C5 brakes up front (will be changing to 14" rotors with Brembos in the near future), LS1 rear discs, 600/150 springs (front/rear), an LT1 based 383 with 1.6 RR's & Hot Cam (waiting to go in).
I'm really diggin' the ProCar seats so those will be on the list to purchase.
Then again, I keep building other cars and bikes (motorcycles) in between making progress on my chevelle.
This winter's project is a cafe racer (tired of seeing all those dang choppers, full fairing rice burners and stock lookin' metrics & H-D's on the road). Mid '60's Norton featherbed frame with an '03 H-D XB/MerlinII/Evo powertrain. Also has inverted showa forks, titanium exhaust, efi & of course some pumping up of the powertrain between the legs (when your riding it guys!!! Dirty minds out there ;) ).
Thus, the ol' A-body is on the back burner again. Maybe this spring I have gathered up enough parts to get the ball rolling again.

SleeperBBC Nov 25th, 05, 1:25 AM Im gonna come outta the closet here also. My car is not pro-touring now, but when I can afford to buy a new garage with attatched house, the project will begin. Normal treatment of 17's, big brake, nice suspension, a BBC and TKO 600. Not sure about AC yet, but the int will be made more comfy.
72silverchevelle Nov 25th, 05, 11:31 PM **ATTENTION** For anyone interested in Procar Rally seats I have something to tell you.I was going to buy a pair, so I called the guy and talked to him for a bit. They are nice looking but I thought it to much of a pain to have to move the seat forward everytime I wanted bakc there. Im just letting you know.

I have some of these seats, and love them. Yeah, it's hard to get in the back seat, but... who cares? My car's so loud noone can stand to sit back there anyway. :)

How hard is it to get in the back? I have passengers quite often, and occasionally my niece and nephew who require child-seats. I want those seats, but not if it's impossible to get the little ones in the back.
69boo307 Nov 28th, 05, 10:38 AM It's not hard at all if you slide the seats up. They just don't slide up and then automatically go back to their previous position. If you don't slide the seat up, it's hard to get back there.
Derek69SS Nov 28th, 05, 11:23 AM Thanks :) If I get enough tax-money back this year, I'll have a pair in my car as well

1966_L78 Nov 28th, 05, 2:38 PM Someday, one of my cars will go this route... I have a set of the B-body spindles, some adapters/hubs from Joe and RJ for front brake upgrades, but now I am not sure I want the B-Body spindles... Been dreaming of a nice 17-inch wheel combo with 275s all around (like Brian), or maybe a slight mini-tub to fit 325/335s on the back... I have the GW lower rear arms with the spherical bearings, and planning on the Edelbrock uppers with the Wolfcraft bearings...
Kind of stuck now... Since wheel (backspacing) and suspension/brakes need to be a package, and that entire package is a little out of reach right now (the wife would flip out if I spent that much right now, especially since everything technically "works" okay now)...
Eventually, I'd really like to go LS1, probably with a centrifical supercharger, and possibly an automatic trans... BB/manual is fun, but I am looking for something more refined...
Really, so far away from my current configuration, that ideally, I'd like to sell mine and start over from scratch with a bare shell... Maybe I'll off one of my current projects someday...
mbonanni1856 Nov 28th, 05, 6:54 PM I am another pro-touring guy here. After going back and forth from daily driver to drag racer to pro touring I have finally decided what I am going to do with my 70' Chevelle. It will be mainly for cruising and show, but will have a pro-touring look. My goals are to take my Chevelle from one end of Route 66 to the other. Then maybe a run from one end of PCH to the other. And at least one Hot Rod Power Tour.
I will start my transformation in the next few weeks with a big brake kit and an Air Ride Technology Cool Ride suspension system. After that comes the hard decision of a new engine/transmission combo. So far I am leaning towards re-building the 350ci crate engine with EFI and a centrifugal supercharger with a 4 speed overdrive transmission.
So far all I have completed is the stereo system, but to me, music is the most important part of road trips.

hmmm that pic looks familiar, oh wait, thats right.......I took it!!! Lol, what dennis isn't telling you, is about his all expense paid trip off of the track into the dirt!! Ever taken the bondomobile to the track after your maiden voyage?
sinned Nov 29th, 05, 1:05 AM Smart ass... Been doing some auto-x at our empty yard. I really need to invest in some tires, either something like the 555R or maybe some BFGoodrich all-terrains for my next BuRP trip.
Come out and visit Clint, we have LOTS of tracks.
Revs Hi Nov 29th, 05, 1:43 AM Hi Guys, I have a Pro Touring / Pro Street 66 Chevelle Malibu in the works. My profile pretty much describes the car...Roller 427, TH400,Dana 60,Bear Brakes, 17"wheels(not too radical),Glodal West suspension front and rear. Similar to Clint's Camino, my car is tubbed to the frame(no back half) and the rear end narrowed 10 inches ect.
The car is 100 miles away getting repainted and should be done in late January. I have to decide on a color this week....I can't believe I'm having such a hard time deciding!!! I'll post pics when I get it back ...Thanks

Nitto 555Rs are drag radials I thought? You definately don't want to take drag radials to the track. Toyo RA1s are the best DOT R-Compound for track use, hands down.
sinned Nov 29th, 05, 2:18 AM Actually the R's work pretty good on the road courses but I should have typed 555RII to be completely accurate, it is a true road race tire.
RA1's are not bad, I think the V710 is a better bang for the buck tire though.
mbonanni1856 Nov 29th, 05, 2:32 AM Oh ok. I have seen a lot of chunking issues with V710s, but they area also a really good tire if you have an extra set of wheels for them.
LS_5 Nov 29th, 05, 8:16 PM Mine's in progress:
http://haleperformance.com/projects/70chevelle/
Will look stock from the outside (except wheels, tires and 1" lower stance). Interior will be stock & white/pearl. Changes will be very noticeable when the hood is open. Hope to have it lookin something like Cody's Firebird. Many of the same bolt-on's. Only stock part is the BB. Firewall, undercarriage and inner fenders will be painted the body color (Fathom Blue). Completely upgraded suspension, 4 wheel discs, 3 inch exhaust, beefed up motor (to about 550-600 hp), TKO 600, quik ratio steering box.
Given how stock it'll look inside and out, not sure it's Pro Touring - more like a t'weener.

If you don't do a trackside soil sample once in awhile, you're not pushing it hard enough.:D
I've ridden Laguna and Willow on superbikes. Turn eight at Willow is scary.
Have lots of family that lives in Hollister,Dennis. Maybe I'll come out & visit.

Acording to Andy I got a "t`weener". Stock looking on inside and outside except for the wheels
Has the usual "Pro Touring" goodies, full Hotchkis suspension, Baer 13" front and rear brakes, Hydroboost, Bilstien shocks, 18 / 20 in budnick wheels, 502 Ram Jet w/ 4L80E overdrive, 12 bolt Posi w 3:90 gears and yes (it wouldn`t be pro touring without it) it has factory A/C with a Sanden compressor
This car is very streetable and fun to drive. I too plan on doing Hot Rod Power Tour or something similar in the future.
Q-ship Dec 4th, 05, 12:10 AM I guess I been in the "Pro-touring" long before it ever had a name. I have been building all around cars since I began playing with the full size rides. I worked for a famous west coast Corvette racer and built some Camaros and Chevelles that burn through the turns for customers. My cars have always been street cars that were secure on the auto-x, drag strip, or the street. The most fun is to bring my 4000 lb Monte Carlo to the auto-x and run the wheels off it and kicking some exotics in the dirt, or a hard run at the strip and put way a car that isn't very drivable on the street, then drive my Monte Carlo home with the AC blowwing cold (beat up a 71 SS Monte so bad he took the car apart). Here is the current herd:
71 Monte Carlo with a 406 small block and tall spindles (I must have been high) and all the luxury acessories.
68 Malibu with a cammed 330 hp/ 350 crate engine, M21 (going to a tremec 3550)
Both cars have my usual suspension and brake set up, except the Monte Carlo which has the B-body spindles and Global West upper arms, and if I had not put the disc brakes from the Monte on the Chevelle I would take those screwed up things off.
Dennis68, is the Orange Chevelle your talking about is it the convertible with the wide 5 wheels, the car used to be Luckys?
sinned Dec 4th, 05, 2:44 AM No, David's Chevelle is a coupe...and a nice car at that.

Not too pick on you but what Exotics did you "kick in to the dirt" with a 4000ilb monte carlo with tubular control arms and a Spindle??
Q-ship Dec 4th, 05, 4:39 AM a few Porsches mostly....
In my opinion they should have kicked my butt.

That is one great looking '71!!! That's exactly the look I'm shooting for, in just about that color combo. All the advantages of modern technology in the suspension, tires and drivetrain, while paying homage to the car's roots.
Now I'm really excited about getting mine finished!
Andy
Redrum Dec 4th, 05, 1:48 PM My 69 certainly meets the mark for pro-touring with all the usual coforts from power leather seats to massive stereo and air conditioning. With over 600 HP and torque it runs in the 11's on its street trim tires.

Hey Jeff,
It looks as if you spent some more money on your '71. I see you added the Ramjet! Yeah baby!
ZZ69chevelle Dec 6th, 05, 8:38 AM Mine's more like amateur touring. :)
