: How to change hood to a pin-on style?

I have a US Body fiberglass 3" cowl induction hood that is designed as a bolt-on, to the stock hood hinges. I've decided to keep it as a pin-on (ie. lift off) style hood but need to figure out exactly how to secure the two rear corners of the hood to the body. I've got factory hood pins on the two front corners so that's taken care of. Maybe I just answered my own question...add two more hood pins to the rear?

Any recommendations on how to accomplish this? TIA!

Hey Wes,

I've never done it but how about this: Take some angle iron & cut to the same length as your hood hinge brackets. Drill two holes that allow the angle iron to bolt to the fender. Dill one hole on the top side of the angle iron & install the pin. The trick is going to drill the hole in the hood to line up with the hole in the new bracket. May want to dill the hood first & use a marker to locate the hole position on the bracket. I would make a cardboard template first & make sure it fit before punching a hole in the hood.

Another thing to consider, the angle of the new brackets must match that of the hood.

Wes,

The custom and race car guys use "Dzus Fastners". The standard fastner is a recessed screw that only requires a 1/4 turn to release. It is spring loaded and pops up. They are also available with a butterfly wing finger and thumb release.

Summit Racing Part Numbers:
SUM-G1620 Std Head, 500" 10 pack $17.95
SUM-G1621 Std Head, 550" 10 pack $17.95
SUM-G1644 BFly Head,500" 10 pack $22.75
SUM-G1645 BFly Head,550" 10 pack $22.75
Hold down plates also required 10 ea $13.05

Also more choices avail such as "Flush and Oval Head". And options for panel thickness ect.

Better looking than 4 hood pins. Plus you get several hold down points instead of only four. This could help prevent the hood from warping over time from engine heat. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Thanks guys for the feedback. Brian, I was trying to remember what those were called and you hit it right on the money. Thanks for all of the part numbers bro. smile.gif

Quick question though. Those metal plates that the fasteners connect to...how do you secure them to the body of the car? Are they simply bent over and secured to the body or what? I was expecting some type of stud set-up instead.

Wes,

I've seen them bent at 45* and then screwed to the inside of the fender and cowel.

And of course they call them "Weld Plates" so you know what that suggests.

Thanks Brian...well, call me crazy but I've gone the hood pin route - on all four corners. It looks a little old school but I really dig it. Works mint. Check it out on 'Photo Page 3'.
