Does anyone have a breakdown of "How many 1968 & 1969 L89 aluminum head chevelle convertibles were made?"

First the KG code is for a 69 and not a 68 Chevelle. In 68 they had L-73's, 34's and L-78's.

The "L-89's" in 69 had 325 and 375 HP. The 1969 KG code was a 325 HP, manual tranny, with 10.25:1 comp ratio, and it was a 396 engine. The 1969 , "402" engine L-89's were coded with 375 HP "CKH" and "CKG". Sometimes one may need a build sheet with so many options being offered after 68.

Including coupe and convertible in 1969 there were 400 L-89's with Aluminum heads. I don't have a break out number in my books.

Rarest of the Chevelle's is the 70 SS Conv 454 LS-6.

There has been no production info found that will give you the data you are looking for. Dan Carr's poster will give you extrapolations / best educated guesses. I don't have Dan's poster in front of me but I'm sure it would give a guesstimate on L89 converts. Maybe someone will pipe in and offer what it shows for you.

Dan's poster would also indicate that the '70 LS-5 convertible is rarer than the LS-6 convertible based on the methods he used to arrive at production numbers. No one knows for sure.

Now there's some bad information.
wrong wrong wrong

It's amazing how many people buy into the hype of the 70 SS LS6 convert.
It's definitely not the rarest Chevelle ever made. Not by a long shot.

Pretty sure that the 70 L-78 convert is a lot rarer that the LS-6 vert.

The 1 of 1 Orange 70 SS396/375 HP, 4 speed car with stripe delete would qualify as the rarest.

Curious, how would you ever know it was 1 of 1 since they didn't keep track of paint?

Sorry Dean, guess I should have elaborated a little more on that one. I should have put in there, the only documented Orange 396/375 HP 70, also the fact that orange was not on the list of production colors for the 1970 model year, so it would have to have been special ordered.

OK, I see, the documentation is the build sheet??

Well if it was in fact "one of one" that would make it equal in rarity to the elusive 65 Z-16 convertible that Jimmy Hoffa ran off with.

You need to add one more word to that statement;
"the only known documented orange..."

Just messin with ya TOM :D

'69 orange w/ L78/ 4 speed.........geeze, if you start talking 3 option combinations, i.e. 4 speed, yellow, bench seat, etc... you could get a lot of cars into the 1 of 20 range.

In 1984 there was exactly 1 Chevette made with a factory rear spoiler (like it needs one).

In 1975 there was only 1 Camaro made with factory D88 stripes (I sure wonder what they looked like). Also in 1975 there were 4 Camaros built with manual steering, which is curious because power steering became standard on Camaros with sixes for '75 (V8s got p/s standard in '74).

Rare does not necessarily mean desirable, if anything it tends to show something as being undesirable. Still it is always good for the 'gee whiz' factor.
