Glenn,
They are not the same.... the snorkle faces a different direction and the heat elbow is different. I bought what I was told was for an air cleaner assy for a '69 325hp car but it turns out to be a '68 air cleaner. It's hanging on the wall now.

At first glance, the closed element air cleaners for the 68 and 69 SS appear identical. Here is the skinny on how to tell them apart...

1968– The snorkel is oval in section, round at the snout and flared. When installed on the carb, the snorkel will point to approximately the 9 o'clock position. Snorkel points downward at approximately 30 degrees from the horizontal plane. The vent hose enters/exits the air cleaner base at approximately the 3:30 clock position to the driver's side valve cover.

1969– The snorkel is oval in section, round at the snout and flared. When installed on the carb, the snorkel will point to approximately the 7:30 clock position. Snorkel points downward at approximately 30 degrees from the horizontal plane. The vent hose enters/exits the air cleaner base at approximately the 9:30 clock position to the passenger side valve cover.

For both units, a warm air valve was fitted to the snorkel, ducted to the passenger side exhaust manifold, and installed on cars equipped with automatic transmissions. Manually shifted cars did not receive this provision for pre-heated air.

Merlin,
So I do not mislead Glenn, is this a '68 filter assy. My biggest question is in the direction the heated air elbow faces. The screwdriver is only for reference.
Thanks for your input.

I would say yes, what you have pictured is indeed for a 68 with automatic. As for the pre-heat tube pointing straight down as oppposed to elbow... I have only seen them with the elbow configuration. Not saying that the straight down version is wrong... just that I have never seen one.
