I have 3 coats base and 4 coats clear. The car has been wetsanded. My question is??? Does more clearcoat make the car more SHINEY??? Should I have put another coat of clear?

I have recently painted 2 cars with 3 clear coats on each and don't think there is much advantage to additional coats unless you are really going to sand it hard (shouldn't have to). The extra coats will make it look deeper to a point. Be careful not to sand with anything coarser than 1200, I did it with 1000 once and had trouble buffing out the scratches.

hey no there are no advantages to adding a 3rd or 4th coat, however you can wet sand with 800 or 1000 but before buffing you must wetsand with 1500-2000 in order for the compound to work properly and remove 1500-2000 scratches, 1000-1200 is to aggressive for the compound to work, goodluck

YOU HAVE NO ADVANTAGES of adding extra clear coats. The only time I EVER apply a 3rd coat is when Ill be buffing the hell out of something. But with todays clears that is a rarity.

Clear is not clear, the more coats you add it can kinda fuzzy the color, plus over time it will yellow. No clear coat made today has recommendations for applying a 3-4th coat.

When buffing I like to use 1000-1200 paper. This cuts the clear much faster and levels the clear. I believe that the 2000 just kinda polishes the clear not leveling it. Once done with 1200 then wetsand again with 2000. this will remove the 1200 scratches and provide the best surface for the polishing compounds to work...Eric

I have a question about clear. My car was painted back around 1981. I can't remember what paint it is but I know it's not laquer. I think I went with the factory type paints. Anyway, I never had it wet sanded. It has the normal orange peel in it. Although it's older paint it's always been garage kept and still looks good. Now that I know more about how I can fix this I'd like too. When I start sanding with 1500 how do I know when I've sanded enough w/out burning threw? Same thing for the 2000 grit. Thanks
