How much prep is necessary on a blasted frame? I'm leaning towards a self etching primer and a urathane top coat. I've been out of the hobby for some time and any advice will be appreciated

Zach is right malibu. I was already to begin work on my frame and was forced to change media right out of the gate. Sand is really just small stones and will leave far to much texture in the soft metal of the frame. I changed to glass bead; a little more expensive but worth it in my opinion.

Sand will work fine for the frame. Just be sure to wear the proper PPE.

Have you considered galvanizing. It's way more effective than just sand blasting and painting. The galvanizing process de-rusts and protects the entire frame, inside and out. After that, the paint is purely cosmetic. For around $250 bucks you can't beat it. Doing mine in about 3 weeks here in VA.

Here's a description of the process and a completed frame by Pete Lohr (station wagon forum moderator)

I can't understand why anybody would want to sand blast and paint a frame IF they could get this done.

I found this place in Utah. I just did a google on galvanizing+utah. I noticed there were others.

Thanks for all the ideas on the frame. It's great to have a resource to access so much car building experience. It looks like I'm going to use a little advice from every one. The frames allready blasted, rough texture, pits, but clean, one month flash rust.I'm really not sure how well its going to etch with out more sanding. Since it's a box frame the galv process has its advantages. I may just put another log on the fire and see how Herb likes his when its finished.
