I've never posted over here but I thought I should get some of your input.

I have a '66 Chevelle that I use for cruising and drag racing. It has a stock 12bolt axle out of a '67 Chevelle (that's what I was told when I bought the axle). I'm pushing limits of what the stock 12bolt can handle. Right now I'm torn between modifying the axle to my needs or buying a complete axle assembly. My deciding factor will be if I can sell the rear axle to some one who can use it for what it is and how much of a bite it will take out of the price of a new axle.

Thanks for any help,
Richard

hey richard,
a 12 bolt will handle a lot of torque when built right. my gear man tells me to make sure to use an eaton posi unit and get the best axles you can afford. the stock posi units are not very strong and are prone to breaking the spider gears. stock axles aren't near as strong as aftermarket either. these things are doubly important if you don't have C clip eliminators. you're probably looking at around a $1000 or so, which should cover parts and installation.
