remember when you are working on your car, and you are wearing safety glasses doesn’t mean they will protect your eye. I was grinding and got a piece of metal stuck in my eye, and I was wearing the safety glasses.:clonk:

Hope you're ok...

I prefer a full face shield to glasses because stuff can sneak around glasses...

A full day after doing some frame-grinding I kept having an agrevation in my eye. So bad that my eye just wouldn't let me hold it open.

I went into the doc, and he squirted some fluid in my eye. the fuild reacted with the metal and changed color.

He proceeded to quirt some more fluid in. All , while I was up against on of those eye doctor machines. I think the removal tool was just a special Q-tip. But after 10 minutes of crying, I was all done and ready for more grinding.

sorry to hear about your grinding accident. I'll take more care the next time I do that kind of work. usually, I don't wear glasses, and just squint really really tight.

I like to wear the full face shield over my safety glasses when I'm grinding stuff. The last time I got something in my eye, I was trying to get the last few chip crumbs out of the bag.

I used to keep my boots on top of my locker at work. One morning, while pulling them down to put them on, a piece of dirt got in my eye. I was already punched in on the clock when it happened. Plenty guys around. Tried to wash it out all morning, no success. About 5 hours after it happened, one of the guys says "Okay, I'm tired of watching you suffer, let's go." So we go to the ER, I spend a couple hours waiting around, finally get relief when the doc comes in and flips my eyelid over a long Q-tip, says "Oh, there it is. Wow, that's a huge piece of dirt, that must've hurt." Took a while for the jokes to subside at the safety team meetings, which I'm a part of. :clonk: :D It happens to the best of us.

Also, I don't know how many times I've taken dirt in the eyes on windy days while riding the bike to/from work. I wear safety glasses when riding, better protection (less a full face helmet). I remember the Q-tip trick, though, so no more trips to the ER. ;)

Been there, done that, several times. Last time, a piece of metal was stuck so bad that I had to go to the ER. I had to lay down on a bench, and the doc told me to hold my eye open with my fingers and look steadily at a small cross in the ceiling (I was obviously not the first one...). I can tell you that it's hard to keep that eye open when you see the tweezers coming closer and closer...

I ALWAYS where safety glasses.

ALWAYS!

Mike, straighten up, pal, you only have one set of eyes. Think off all the TV/cars/women you'd miss out on seeing if you lost them. NOT WORTH IT!! Ever see a grindstone explode?

Anyways, depite wearing glasses, aluminum is not my friend. 3 times I've gotten aluminum in there over the years...never anything else.

My doctor doesn't use tweezers. He SCRAPES the chip off with a probe/dental pick lookin' thing. It doesn't come easily, either, it always takes work! Talk about hard to sit still, tweezers are bad enough, but this thing looks like its gonna impale you!

The cool part is while he's working the eyeball distorts, (goes out-of-round). The world takes on a fun-house mirror effect...pretty wild.

I can think of better ways to spend the afternoon.

Are you hearing me BBM? :)

I had to make a trip to the ER last night. Was moving some old big block parts and got some grease on my hand (at least I thought it was grease). I wiped most of it off but then rubbed my eye. 20 minutes later my eyeball is burning like crazy and is swollen twice the size of normal (it felt like it was going to pop out of my head). Apparently there was something in the grease that I was alergic to. Scared the crap out of the old lady - she thought I'd been in a fight when I walked in the house! A couple steroid pills and I'm good as new today. Thank God for drugs! (the legal kind)

i've been to the ER 3 times for stuff in the eyeball. safety glasses with side shields apparently don't work all the time, and a full face shield is only practical when you are all contorted with your arms up over your head under a car that's 18 inches off the ground if you've never tried to wear a full face shield under a car that's 18 inches off the ground with your arms up over your head while operating a cutting wheel on a rusty exhaust pipe.

Bummer,

I had a peice of metal get in my eye once when I was porting heads, and yes, I was wearing safety goggles too! And to beat that, I'm a SAFETY guy. Looks real cool to the coworkers and subordinates. DOH! :D

I had a wierd accident long ago. I had a friend polishing a rare spoon (yes a SPOON) of all things to have go wrong. any ways the polisher grabed the spoon and flew across the room about 20 feet and hit me so hard in the eye (yes eye) and proceeded to pop my eye ball out of the scoket. So here Iam with my eye ball hanging out of my face going to the hospital, and what a scary sight it was for the other people that saw it for me it didnt hurt till the reinstalled my eye ball then it swelled up afterwards for a few days of pain. All is well now. :P

Could you see with it still, while it was out? Did you try to look at your other eye with it? :D

Woooogh! (shuddering-shiver-grimace)

You can bet that combo doesn't happen every day! And I bet they looked at you weird at the hospital when you told the story!

How do you "reinstall" it? Do they squeeze it past into the orbit? (after all, I am a DYI guy and you never know when I might meet a spoon with a bad disposition!)

Yes and it was really wierd too. Very hard to walk a straight line caus you cant just close your eye being it is laying on your cheek and looking at the ground and your other eye is looking forward, very wierd and makes you kinda dizzy also. Was freeky but did not bother me that much till I scared some people at the hospital in the er room now that was fun, hehe.

If I only had a beer at the time I might have gone to the local bar and scaed the crap out of everyone their. hehehe:beers:

Was doing some grinding under the car 2 weeks ago, and after that my left eye was messed up for 2 days, constantly tearing, red, and the friction inside the eye lid was bugging the hell out of me.. Looking to purchase full face shield at this time or before next grinding sestion...

No blood at all, just kinda freaky trying to see 2 different things ar the same time and your eyes are trying to focus on them at the same time. was kina freaky holding my eye ball in my hand. Funny thing is when the put my eye back in they used a tool that kinda looked like a SPOON, lol of all things... After a few hours back in the socket it was dry as hell from being out in my hand and had to use some special eye wash for a while till the tear glands caught up with the eye back in the socket..
The eye ball accident was nothing compared to some of my other injuries...

I was also gonna ask if he could still see with it!! Other than it totalling sucking... what was it like man?

Once in a week, oops, I mean a while, :D I catch my boss using the OSHA approved eye squint while operating machinery.
