OK,
Need a little expert guidance here.
Took the rt 1/4 panel off my dad's '71 and got the new one mostly on. The upper seam that was leaded was a pain in the a$$ and I know there has to be a better way of doing it.
When I take the left side off should I melt the lead out with a propane torch or ?
Been a long time since I did all this stuff and never had the "priviledge" of gettting a full 1/4 to have to deal with this seam.
So far so good, I didn't really like the way I did that seam on disassembly but I was able to get it back together looking good, just a little filler now and it is good.
Should I use lead to partially fill in seam right along the weld? If so any tricks?
Kinda to "seal" the area up.
Trying to get this one done so he can work on the car while I'm gone on vacation. Do the little stuff.

Use a torch with very low heat, lead melts at a fairly low temp so you dont need its glowing red. Using the torch you should be able to remove the lead in a few minutes, just dont heat one spot up move around on the leaded seam til its all out.

Once its out you should be able to see and drill out all the spot welds, making disassembly easy. Once the new qurter is on and welded just use plastic filler or bondo to fill the void. Dont lead it half way the mud the rest, just mud it all. For a brand of filler I would use rage or rage gold made by Evercoat. Some say that fiberglass or all metal filler is water proof, its NOT. They all contain the same filler material-Talc, all will absorb moisture if not selaed right from behind.

As for sealing there are no tricks just make sure your welds have no pinholes and you seal the backside(from the inside of the car) with some type of seam sealer. If you really want to protect agaisnt further corrosion apply a coat or two of expoy primer on that seam and then apply your mud on top of that. Use PPG's dplf expoy primer. One on expoy is that am not a fan of expoy on bare metal what so ever, so when I do apply mud over expoy I always shoot one coat of self etch first then apply the expoy. But never ever apply mud over self etch, only expoy primer can vbe used under filler...Eric
