: About to pull my front end apart.. Any Pointers
DWJ70 Nov 14th, 05, 2:34 PM Well i finally got the body pulled from the chasis, and am about to start pulling everything off of the frame for powdercoat. This being my first attempt at building a car any tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Derek69SS Nov 14th, 05, 4:00 PM What are your intentions? Stock rebuild, mild performance, or hang with new vettes in the corners??? :) (BTW, that last one isn't too unreasonable  )
When you come up with an idea of parts you plan to use, post a complete list here before ordering anything... then be prepared to change your list ...several times :D
DWJ70 Nov 14th, 05, 4:57 PM Well this is what im leaning towards (at least today)
Complete poly front end rebuild kit
1-1/2" Drop springs Not sure what Lbs i need just running a small block
SPC adjustable upper control arms.. (can't stand looking at what seems like 6-7 shims)
Stock Lowers
Will the installation of qa1 coilovers be worth the cost? Still new to this so anyhelp will be appreciated
thanks
Dave
Derek69SS Nov 14th, 05, 8:41 PM Would Howe Precision tall ball-joints be within your budget? They can be bought as a package deal with the SPC uppers from www.scandc.com (http://www.scandc.com/)
The stage I package uses just uppers and stage II uses both upper and lower tall B-Js. SC&C was the cheapest place I found for the SPC arms, so I'd suggest ordering from them anyway. :)
If you go with poly bushings, get the greasable kind... at least you can grease them when they get noisy... the graphite ones will squeak, and there's nothing you can do about it :D
Coilovers are nice, but they are expensive. If it's adjustability you want, you can use spring height adjusters like mine, and then just run the adjustable shocks. You'll save some money, but they will be harder to adjust when you want to do it. I'm running 700# springs, but I honestly won't know how they will ride for at least 5 months :)
Ralph67 Nov 14th, 05, 8:57 PM I would use rubber on the front end, adj uppers are nice, coil overs are over kill (imho) If you can get all moog steering stuff i would use that. Be careful when you pop the front springs! Ralph
Xtreme70SS396 Nov 14th, 05, 11:43 PM Well, I have the graphite poly's and no squeaks of any kind. Been in, ungreased, for several years.... I can recommend them in front without hesitation. I agree the coil overs are probably overkill, but if you like the different look go for it.
My 70 has the hotchkis setup and handles like it's on rails, I love it, but it's not for everyone. Good springs, shocks, bigger swaybars and new bushings of rubber or poly and the car will handle very well.
DWJ70 Nov 15th, 05, 9:40 AM Well i think i will go for the stage 2 package, and i will look further into the greasable polly kits. Save the money on the qa1's. Continue my research on spring rates. And figure out if its cheaper to piece together the rest of the front end parts, sway bar bushings, idler arms, tie rod ends etccc.. or just buy a kit and pitch the ball joints and upper bushings(possibly sell for a case of beer or spelling lessons)
Thanks for all the info
Xtreme70SS396 Nov 15th, 05, 9:51 AM Sorry, forgot to mention - see the link for how to modify stock lower control arms to be significantly stronger. I got the kit from Pete @ einstyn (he's also our wagon section moderator) and had it welded on. Looks stock, much stronger.
