I have been looking for a C, D or E 1972 date coded block. I have been watching Ebay and checking a few of the sites. Anyone know of a website or source I should check. I am concentrating on the block but would buy complete engine (or car for that matter).

Did you place an ad in the classified section? I have had really good luck with fellow TC members there. And their prices are often better!

Curious to hear from some of the engine builders.

Is it getting hard to find 454's or are they a dime a dozen.

Also seems like everyone is going for the big cubers so less demand for the small 454 block.

Remember when a 327 was big!

Sandy,

Yep, I remeber when the 327 was the hot engine, then the 350, then the 396, and on. Heck, I remember when having a hot 283 was the big thing.

To answer your question, it seems to matter where you are located. In upstate NY, a 454 can be hard to come by, and the junk yards just laugh. If it's over 15 years old, the junk yards have already got rid of it. If it's a 350 to 454, they pull them as soon as they enter the door and ship them off to the central warehouse(s). I ended up driving over a 100 miles to get my last 454, as not even the swap sheets have any BB listed anymore.
I only have four more engines to build, (next year) a 454, a 327, a 383, and a 454 and I'm done. I've wanted to quit for a while, and with all the new crate engines, I'll just push everyone that way. I think it's a better deal, you don't have to worry about a bad block and you have a solid warranty to boot.

Fred.
