Can't beat the clock.

I have the greatest respect for men that serve. I became pretty interest in WWII lately, and bought among other things some cds of ebay of interviews with guys who served in WWII. Wanted to hear their experiences, there are less and less every day.

Did any of you read the entire story in the link? It states what year the final veteran of several wars passed and was quite shocking to me. Here it is:

Other wars and the ages of their last veterans the year they died: the War of 1812, 105, 1905; the Indian Wars, 101, 1973; the Mexican War, 98, 1929; the Civil War, 112, 1958; and the Spanish-American War, 106, 1992.

I couldn't believe that someone who fought in the civil war was still alive when the 57 chevys were being made. Or how about the final veteran of the Spanish-American war passing in 1992!! Wow, its too bad you don't hear about these incredible people until after they pass, I would absolutely love to hear every story these guys have.

It would be so cool if someone with the proper equipment and resources could get a few of the final survivors of WWI all together and start recording their conversations and stories. Once they are all gone, all we have is the history books to tell us what happened. Its a shame not to tap the well, before the well goes dry.

i can remember when the last civil war vet died. he had been a 15 year old drummer in the confederacy if my memory serves me right. actually i thought he made it until about 1961 or 1962 but i guess that must not be right. just a few years ago they were saying that there were only 3,000 WWI vettes left. now that number is down to only around 30! wow. well anyhow i would like to thank all the vets past and present and to all of you here on the board i tip my hat and say thank you very much. some of us understand how much we owe you and some of us dont but the fact is we all owe you our freedom whether we realize it or not. thanks!

I've heard many stories about my grandfather and World War I. He supposedly saved his plattoon and was named a hero and I have seen the metals which prove it. He died in 1975, the same year I was born. What I would give to hear some of his stories first hand. War history is really cool. Wish I felt the same way when I was in school. I would have been a history major...

I think here in Canada we are down to 7 WWI veterans left. We could lose all of them this year, at that age everyday is a gift.:(

Quite awhile back there was a guy who posted the verbage from some old letters that were written and sent back to the states from a guy in WWI. Too bad those are probably long gone.
