: rear window trim clip pins
Professor_SS Dec 31st, 01, 12:00 PM while repairing some rot in the window channel area on the rear window of my 72 I had to weld in peices that eliminated several the pins (for lack of a better description) that the window trim clips hook to. I have two guestions, 1. does anyone have a diagram or a description of the required location for all of the pins (the dummy, me, didn't make a diagram before I ground them off or cut out the rusted areas) 2. How do you replace the pins? someone mentioned using small sheet metal screws, someone else told me that body guys have some kind of machine that they use to replace them. How do you pros do it?
thanks in advance for any information you are willing to offer.

sevt_chevelle Dec 31st, 01, 4:38 PM The most common way of replacing those pins is using small screws, I prefer stainless. And yes there is machine that can weld on new pins. The machine is called a stud gun, it welds small nail like studs to a dent to pull it out. They make a tip that will screw into the stud gun that will allow you to weld on new pins. This gun is spendy around 300 bucks so probably that means a trip to the body shop. I believe that this special tip is included with the stud gun when you buy it, so the shop might have this tip. If not eastwood sells them for around twenty bucks.
When I get more time later tonight I will go out to the shop and measure the spots for those pins...Eric
Don_Lightfoot Dec 31st, 01, 4:54 PM Don't want to steal Eric's thunder here, but my car is just out in the garage and I have the moldings off for buffing. Mine is a 69 but I do not believe the rear glass is any different from a 72????? Between the two of us you should get a good idea.
On each side mine has three clips, each about 6" apart.
On the top mine has six clips. First starts about 3" from the corner and then about 9" apart thereafter. The two in the middle are only about 4" apart.
On the bottem mine has ten clips. First ones are 3" from the outside, then about 5" apart thereafter. The two in the middle are about 9" apart.
Good luck Prof.

Professor_SS Jan 1st, 02, 10:29 AM thanks loads guys, how far from the corner are the sides ones, if you don't mind measuring them for me....
I'm having some trouble keeping my buddy on task with my car, and it is coming to a head, I may end up having to pull the car away from him and either attempting to finish it myself or try to find another shop... unfortunate, but the excuses are starting to get to me and with it being rolled out of his shop for weeks at a time to make way for things like racing tractors and custome ricers and a monster truck, and sitting outside under a car port with bare metal exposed, i.e., surface rust forming on areas already being worked on, not to mention rust on my chrome alternator and air cleaner, that he says will "clean right up" and the fact that it will be 1 year the first week in feb and the car is less than 1/2 way home, I'm about at the end of my rope...
sorry to vent, not a good week... sorry
thanks again for the help
happy new year, hope it is better than last

Mine are essentially symmetrical Prof, about 5/6" from the corners and between clips.

Professor_SS Jan 1st, 02, 12:42 PM thanks Don...
sevt_chevelle Jan 1st, 02, 12:48 PM On the bottom measuring right where the quarter meets the rear deck filler(the piece between the rear window and the deck lid). Starting the right hand side or the pass side the first pin measures 1/1/16, 8/1/4, 15/14/16, 23/1/8, 28/3/8, 35/3/8, 44/1/8 and the last pin is 49/5/8.
On the top starting where the quarter meets the roof skin the most vertical part the first pin measures 4, 11/14/16, 21, 25/1/2, 34/3/4, 43/1/2.
I dont have any measures for the sides as I just got done replacing the quarters but I remember that there was 4 pins on each side.
Between Don and I you should get a good idea on placement, as this isnt all that important on placement.

Good point Eric. I would just make sure there are no clips where the various moldings overlap.
