: P325/50R15 or P275/50R15 Pic on a 70
00WS6TA Nov 9th, 05, 10:52 AM If anyone is running either P325/50R15 or P275/50R15 on the back off their 70 Chevelle can you let me know how it is working out? Back spacing etc...
I'm thinking about one of these sizes in the MT Street Radials.
Pitures if possible.
thanks, Dan
chev-hell Nov 9th, 05, 7:08 PM i have a 295/50/ and i was going to go with the 275/50 mickey because it was the closest and my 295's fit perfectly, but going any bigger could mean problems if your rear end shifts (i had some sportsmans 29x12.5 that fit, but if the rear end angled they would rub badly).....

Guess I should have mentioned I have 10" rims - think with 5.5 offset. Still any problem - And do you have any photos from theback of your car you could share.
thanks, Dan
JWA Nov 10th, 05, 12:08 AM Dan,
Take a look through Wes Colby's website. I think he has run that size of tire. I believe he went to the 295/60/15. www.bruteforcechevelle.com (http://www.bruteforcechevelle.com/)

The 275/50's will easily fit if your 15x10's have 5.5" backspace.
The 325's will be a different story,altogether.
Purs Nov 11th, 05, 12:04 PM don't know how different the 70 wheel well is from a '68 but I ran a 325/50 on mine. Rolled fender lip to fit. Very close all around. Was fine while traveling in a straight line but I was careful in turns. I loved the way they looked though.... pics in my sig.

That's why I said what I did. 275's are a no-brainer but 325's take considerably more ingenuity. :D

Many thanks for the picture. Just to make sure I am understanding you correctly, the 295/50-15's on a 10" rim 5.5"bs (which is the same size rims I have) fit fine (close but ok)? Did you need to rol the lip up any?
I am going to get new tires today and love the look of 295/50-15's on a 10" rim 5.5"bs.
Awesome looking car by the way!
Dan
p.s.
Everyone - thanks as well! You input is great appreciated.
SleeperBBC Nov 13th, 05, 12:11 AM Chev-hell, it appears that you cut the lip towards the top of the wheel opening. If so, how much room do you have to the frame. Could you have gone with a 6 inch backspace, and not cut the lip? Great pic for reference, it really show the fit.

i actualy tried to roll the lip a few years ago when i had stuffed a Mickey Thompson SPortsman 29x12.5" under there!!! it fit, but rubbed when i twisted the rear end. with the 295's i don't think you'd even have to roll it, it's not much of a roll, mainly just the trim as i didn't wanna tear the car up... i'd have to check, but i think a 6" b.s. may work.
rianbechtold Nov 13th, 05, 1:32 PM I don't think a 15 inch wheel can have a 6" backspace without hitting the lower shock mount.
chev-hell Nov 13th, 05, 4:05 PM I don't think a 15 inch wheel can have a 6" backspace without hitting the lower shock mount.
bingo!!! that's the part that i didn't think about, it's too close as it is... on a 10" rim it wouldn't work at 6" of bs
Clint44 Nov 13th, 05, 5:44 PM I don't think a 15 inch wheel can have a 6" backspace without hitting the lower shock mount.
Good point. You can run 6" backspacing with a 17" or larger diameter wheel but any more than 5.5" on a 15" wheel will cause problems.
hilljack Nov 13th, 05, 6:15 PM Dan, you should check to see if your rear end is centered on the body/frame. Put a straight edge on your tire and measure the gap to the wheel well lip on both sides and report back with your findings:D, it seems one side or the other will have more or less in most cases. This is where problems arise when trying to stuff fat tires.
If your even then go for it:thumbsup:
chev-hell, do you get tire rub with people in the back? It looks kick a$$ but close?
SleeperBBC Nov 13th, 05, 7:22 PM Thats exactly the type of info I was looking for. I plan on going 295-17.
00WS6TA Nov 13th, 05, 11:49 PM Well guys,
Actually settled on 275/50 R15's BF Goodrich Drag Radials. LOL - Went back to the place I worked when in high school - the days when "Road Huggers" were the tires to have and of course mounted on Cragars or Rocket Racing Wheels ;)
Some of the old gang was still there after 25 years (dating myself) anyways, they had a pair of 275/50 R15's BF Goodrich Drag Radials and they looked and fit nice, plus I still get the employee discount :)
OH – the look on their faces when I pulled in with the blown 70 Chevelle on the trailer, it was great – also great seeing the old gang and talking hot rods.
Now I hope these tires work – also just got my Jegster Lift Bars Friday, tomorrow night if I can stay a wake, I’ll install them. It would be nice to transfer some the HP to speed. LOL
Thanks to everyone who chimed in on this thread!!
I’ll post pictures tomorrow.

This may be a dumb question, but this post was about sizing for a 70 Chevelle, it would be the same size that would fit in the 71-72's too right? I'm trying to figure out what I want for my 72, and I'm trying to get the exact size I need for when the time comes...
Thanks!
LateNight72 Nov 30th, 05, 1:52 PM Erik,
70-72's are all the same from the firewall back (minus the apperance changes [ie; bumper, seats, etc..])..
So yes.. the same thing/fit...

mister_n2o Nov 30th, 05, 2:55 PM anyone got a decent rear shot of a 325/50?
rchevellea Nov 30th, 05, 3:24 PM eric make sure that your rearend is period correct for the 72 if you have an older rear end like 64-67 they are one inch narrower and you can get bigger tires if you have the narrower rear end. someone correct me if i am wrong please.

Sorry,a narrower rear won't allow a wider tire. The size of the wheelwell is the limiting factor.
A too-wide rear can limit you,however.
rchevellea Dec 1st, 05, 1:53 AM Clint your right eer, thats what I meant to say, um include.
Project72Malibu Dec 1st, 05, 1:07 PM Thanks for the info. I thought the 70-72's would be the same, just wanted to be sure.
I have the stock 12 bolt rear, so that part shouldn't matter...
Thanks!

Who manufactures a 295/17?
SleeperBBC Dec 8th, 05, 3:31 PM I must have been thinking 18 inch, which I might go with, if I can pull the trigger on the much higher cost. You can get a 295/35/18.

Thank you. I really miss that car. That's a negative on the 17's. It had 15x10's with 5.5" of BS. Check out the link in my sig that says "My Old '68" for a side shot.

thanx. was your car lowered at all? im looking for a similiar stance

Just roll the outer fenderlip. I loved the look but I'll stress again it was VERY close on all sides. I would probably not do it again because of the rub when cornering.

Nope just original wore out rear springs and original smallblock front springs with my 462.
mac762 Dec 18th, 05, 10:00 AM Hey Purs, Sorry if this is off topic but is that 496 in the sleeper? I love it if it is. I bet you really suprise some people with that one!
The rear view of that red 396 with the big meats is great!
