Is the area from the top of the firewall to the w/s to be the body color to be correct? Should it continue under the w/s to the base of the dash? There is that small area between the w/s and the dash pad visible.
Hoping to paint soon- would like to do it original!

No, it should be black like the firewall.

so where on the top/side of cowl is the break between body color and black? Is there a hard line right at the caulked seam (about even with the rear inside edge of the fender tops)?

Heres a shot of my 68 after I pulled it off the frame.
It's not a tape line between the black cowl and the green. It's more like an overspray line. With the fenders on, you don't see the green at all.
