Anyone konw where to get new ones with the aluminum piece intact, or how to remove it short of destroying it and the plate so the plate can be replated? Thanks,

Les

You'll see them occasionally on ebay; someone on here had a source for new, cnc machined ones, they looked pretty nice.

Beware the reproductions that are much shorter (don't come past the pad)

You have to be careful that you don't overheat the plastic, but you can use a hairdryer to soften the adhesive and slowly pry the aluminum from the base. You can use something broad and flat like a wood shim and slowly work it behind the aluminum as you heat it. Be patient - it can be done. Good luck!

Mine are passable, that is the look good enough for me at this point.

I'm thinking when it comes time to do something with them, I'll get them sprayed with that chrome paint.

The billet Aluminum ones are really nice but thats just too much money.
(I think they were $200)

he(ebay guy ) says he sells in quantity, maybe all of us 68 owners could do a group purchase? I know mine look like garbage.

I purchased a set of the cnc plates. When I took everything apart I found a big spring pushing out the door panel behind the inside door latch. Its about the height of an engine valve spring and close in diameter just much thinner metal thickness. Anyone know what it does? I can't get the plate to pull tight to the door panel without removing the spring. I pulled the spring out and haven't noticed a functional difference. Anyone know what its for?

I had mine replated at:
http://www.cvvacuumplaters.com/

They even repaired the mounting studs that were broken.

I couldn't replate mine as they were broken. Here are some pics (before and after) of the cnc plates.

Not sure what OPG is selling, but they aren't for a 68 Chevelle. Too short!

it says they are "These plates are original on all 1968 models"

but they do appear to be missing the ribbed aluminum pattern. They look short but im sure they are correct. I dont know what else would take shorter bases? what car?!?

Some Olds Cutlass models used a plate that was the same size as the armrest and did not stick out under the door handles. Maybe thats what they're selling.

Didn't the Monte Carlo use the shorter style plate as well? Perhaps that is what they are really for. For certain, they are not correct for a 68. The horizontal shaft on the inside door latch release mechanism on a 68 is about 3/8 inches longer than what you will find on a 69 to 72 Chevelle, and can be identified by the presence of two grooves around the circumference of the shaft as opposed to just one on other models. If you are using 68 release mechanisms, you really need the armrest backing plates to make everything fit properly. The plates that are referenced in Bill Rose's post above, will fit and function on a 68, but they are not correct. They are too short and they lack the ribbed aluminum finger board.
To my knowledge, correct plastic reproductions are not available. Re-plated originals can be found occasionally, but their cost is comparable to the billet reproductions on ebay.
Many of the high dollar "restored" Chevelles you see on ebay simply have nothing behind the front armrests. Perhaps this is testament to the scarcity of reasonably priced replacements, original or reproduction.
I was fortunate, and purchased re-plated originals several years ago for $75.00 from a vacuum plater that was closing their doors. If I had to replace them again, given the choices I have today, I would probably opt for the billet items.

Quote from the ad--
NOTE: These back plates are original style and measure approximately 13" x 5-3/4".
The correct ones are about 15/12" long.

I sent my originals to www.american-classic.com (http://www.american-classic.com), they used a chemical to float the Aluminum scratch guard off (to prevent any removal marks) re-chromed the plastic, re-plated the guard and they look better than factory new for $195.00.

I will measure what I already have before I buy. Re-chroming what I have is not an option as mine are both cracked.

Also, I noticed that when you click on "ADD TO CART" next to the description where it reads "Pair" for $40, It automatically places 2 in the quantity box in the shopping cart which raises the price by double.
I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to OPGI and figuring they have a glitch in their system but a PAIR to me would mean both right and left and just one pair for $40 ????

They do not LOOK correct for a '68 though.

Sign me up for a group buy.
I was ready to buy those over a year ago for $200 but I put it off and now they aren't available anymore.

The "Correct" ones in the OPGI catalog are NOT the right ones. They're over 2" too short and no ridges.

I hope nobody minds if I bring this thread back to life.
I'm still looking for a pair of these and if all I can find is some billet aluminum pieces then I'll take them!

Anything come out in the past couple years for these?

Ausley's carries them, part #ARP0680 for $69 a pair. I have a pair, they're a good quality part (for once).
