My car goes into the paint shop this weekend.I have to shim the drivers door top hinge out a little to bring the door closer to flush with the fender. If I put shims in behind it there will be a bit of a gap to the main door post. If I was to fill this gap with seam sealer as neatly as possible will the base coat paint over it ok or should I be using something else?

Help much appreciated

As long as it's auto seam sealer it can be painted just fine. Dip your finger in thinner to spread the seam sealer nice and smooth. Mike

I've not yet seen in all my years alive working around cars, mainly Chevelles, with door hinges shimmed out. The shimming is generally done on the fenders. Try shimming the fender outwards with some thin shims if you need them. May be a lot easier than trying to shim the door hinges

The hinge bolted to the door will give yu the adjustmet needed to fit to the fender. Is that hinge adjusted all the way out?? If you have to shim the door out to fit the fender the fender is too far out, remove shims from the top of fender where they bolt up by the hinge on the door post.

If you need shims on the door to make it fit the fender it tells me that the cowl is pushed in, thus the need for the shims.

Thanks guys
As this is my first time at a restoration I thought I had to shim the door out. After your replys I looked closer at the door. Turns out all I had to do was adjust the top hinge on the door side, now it fits perfectly.I didn't realize adjusting that hinge moved the door in and out. I was thinking it moved the door from side to side. Anyways, fits now, thanks agin. Next the paint shop.

Thanks again
