I am restoring a 65 Chevelle with a date of 7A on the trim tag. What would be an acceptable cast date for the block? Is there an acceptable range in the hobby that would be considered correct? Would a block with a date of B255 be to old? Is it possible to have date codes on some of the engine pieces,Carb, Dist, Heads.. etc that are dated after the block cast date but before the date on the trim tag? Thanks

I restored my 65 to what would be called "Period Correct".
All of date codes are correct for that eras time interval, but not necessarily by what the manufacturers would have been. My car looks and IS bone stock by all means, except the casting dates don't quite jibe with the date the car rolled off the line.
This was alot easier to do than hunting down everything date coded correct. I felt if I didn't at least have the original block that would have matched the VIN, the correct build time frame wouldn't matter,at least to me.

I'm half guessing that the blocks were usually cast 2-6 months before installation. Hopefully someone will chime in with the correct answers.

B 25 5 is a little over 4 months prior to your cars build date; that's probably 'acceptable' but 1 - 3 months is probably more the norm. There are cars documented with a block cast date of about 6 months prior to Trim Tag build date, but that's rare. On the other hand, my 69 has a number of the components cast only a couple weeks prior to the build date.

I think the block and heads were cast at the same foundry so they should be close to matching, usually within a few days of each other. Other pieces such as carb and distributor were external items from Delco Remy/Holley/Rochester/etc. and could possibly be dated later than the block and heads but I wouldn't guess more than a few days except maybe in the case of something considered low production like maybe the L79.

Transmission and rear end I've seen dates as much as 3 months before final assembly on some 67s.
