: inner fender to frame seal/cushion
chevl71 Jan 24th, 02, 1:18 PM Does anyone know what the rubber seal that goes between the inner fender and frame on a '71 Chevelle looks like? Where are they available? Or can something easily replace it?

Professor_SS Jan 24th, 02, 2:33 PM do you mean the inner fender splash seal?
they are all available in reproduction, year one lists them on page 449 for $11.00 a pair. I'm sure that NPD, and Ground up has them also.

chris71 Jan 24th, 02, 2:38 PM If your refering to the flap to keep road grime out of the engine compartment...Its called an a-arm splash shield.
Looked them up in Classic Muscle from Modern Chevrolet in Winston Salem NC $8.00 for the pair. 800-722-4828

they have a boat load of Chevelle parts
rusty66 Jan 24th, 02, 2:59 PM On my 66 it looked like a piece of L shape foam, which was stapled flush to the skirt though. Dimensions 1 foot long, alomst 1/4 thick, long leg some 1 1/2, short leg 3/4.
The funny thing is the mounting point was so high up the skirt it could never touch the frame.
Never seen one advertised.

chevl71 Jan 24th, 02, 3:01 PM Hey thanks for the responses.
It's not the A arm splash shield that I need.
Prof. I'll check my Y.O. catalog tonight to see if that's it.
There is a rubber strip approximately 1/2 wide and maybe 6 inches long attached to the lower curved edge of the steel inner fender where it overlaps the frame. It keeps the inner from rubbing on the frame where they over lap. You can't really see it unless you're under the car looking straight up to the frame.
I'd describe it's location on the frame as to the rear of where the brake line bracket is. Is simply keeps the metal to metal from sqeaking (metal inner against the metal frame).

chevl71 Jan 24th, 02, 3:53 PM I found it in the assembly manual, the page after the A arm dust shield. It's called a spacer, pn 3929857. I didn't see it in Y.O. and called Ground Up, no luck.
What I did was lay two 1/4" beads of black silicone RTV on the inner fender and let them dry completely before installing the i.f. It worked fine and you can't see them after the i.f. is installed.

DUKE 69 Jan 24th, 02, 6:33 PM I did the same thing as Von, and it worked great! My original inners had the "factory pieces" but they appeared to be in the wrong place. Try to fit the inners a little bit before you put on the RTV, just to be sure where to place it. Each side might be a little different.

Professor_SS Jan 24th, 02, 8:48 PM Ok, what your talking about is not what I thought you meant. I thought you were talking about the A-arm seal.. sorry
Could you cut a piece of rubber inner tube and fasten it in to accomplish this?

chevl71 Jan 25th, 02, 4:46 AM Good ideas guys. Thanks for looking and helping.
I may be fitting the inners in the next month, I'll see what looks like the best fix.
Thanks!

New68SS Jan 25th, 02, 5:32 AM Doug,
I work for commercial roofing co. and we use a butyl tape for sealing joints in metal roofing seams. its about 1/2" wide and 1/8" thick and remains pliable. If you can find this at Lowes or Home Depot it would probably work for what you are wanting. I have the inners out of my 71' and I see exactly what you are talking about and I think the butyl tape would be perfect. It comes in a roll, with a backing paper that you should probaly leave on to prevent from sticking on both sides.
