Hey folks, I just got this '70 Chevelle with a ZZ502 and the other goodies in my sig. It doesn't hook but I have a set of 29X14.5-15LT Hoosier QTP's coming to fix that. If it still won't hook I guess I'll tub it and put the 14" Centerline Bigs and Littles I have on it. This car is a replacement for my '03 Cobra and doesn't feel as quick yet but I plan to change that. It's the 502/567 version but has had a full roller setup put in it. I don't know if the cam is the one that came with it or not. This thing lopes madly at 950 RPM and the cam doesn't clear out until about 2400-2600 R's. Does this sound like the cam that came with it? Damned thing sound like a ProStock car. it rude, crude and obnoxious.

The Hoosiers that you have coming are 14.5's? Are you sure they will fit?
It sounds like it is not tubbed now.

I'm sure you can get it to hook without tubbing it and using huge tires.
I have a 69 with a stock ZZ502, turbo 400, and 4.10 and with 10.5W slicks it picked up the front tire with a 1.633 60 ft. Although my car is mini tubbed I don't think it needs to be to get it to hook up. For the street I'm using BFG drag rads. Hooks up very well too.

Check into what condition the rear bushings are in and the shocks make a big difference, as well as the springs. I'm not a suspension expert but I know my car is simple and works.

My ZZ502 idles great with the stock cam. 13" of vacuum at idle.

i wouldn't tub the car, you'd be suprised how well a 10" tire will bite, as for speed, my chevelle has 572hp 454.. pretty lumpy idle, and will run nearly 1 sec. faster than a friends 03 cobra in the 1/8 mile at the track.... i do have the TKO600 but yours should run great, may not "feel" like it's faster but check the slips :)

Might checkout our performance forum on how to get your 'velle to hook:

No whellie bars. :D I like.

Before I got this car it was like this, on 10.5W ET Drags

Sweet! Yeah, the 14.5's will fit a 10" rim and barely fit under a slightly rolled rear fender. That'll give me 12" of sticky on the ground. I'm gonna Dyno it today if the rain stays away a little longer for a baseline.

Ok, took it to the Dyno yesterday and she put down 427 / 455 first pass. The guys yanked the carb, rejetted it, change the acelerator pump spring etc. and we went again. She maxed out at 437 / 460 while spinning on the Dyno. We tried changing tire pressure but still had a big wobble in the graph on all runs. Man that TH400 is eating a lot of power. They did get the A/F dead on and got rid of a nasty hesitation it had. I got a fresh pair of QTP's to put on today so maybe I can sneak back up there for another run or two. They figure she's making about 580 at the crank. Time for a manual shift valve body I guess.

My stock ZZ502/502 pulls from an idle to the red-line. I would think your cam was changed.

We changed jets and tweaked the carb to get rid of a hesitation and she pulls hard but definately doesn't have the normal cam in it. They figure she's making 580 or so at the crank.

It would be interesting to know the cam. If it doesn't even really come on till nearly 3000 then you might be a little mismatched with the combo. Maybe a little more stall to match your cam would be good since you already have the 4.11 gears.

Ok, put the Hoosiers on yesterday and she flat hooks with some heat. I think I need to tighten the tranny up a bit and maybe go to a higher stall. She ain't pullin' the wheels yet but I plan to.

Man, I would have liked a ride in your Cobra ... if your 502 'Velle doesn't seem close:-)

Seriously search through the performance forums ... you'll find tons on making a 502 hook on 8.5-9" slicks! Basically need good bushings, and reconfigure you LCA parallel to the ground.

Without a doubt you'll be lifting the front suspension a long ways ... but I don't know as which you've got enough there to pull the wheels off the ground. I know I haven't seen a stock 502 do it yet.

Well, I put the 29 x 14.5-15 Quick Time Pros on her and she hooked right up after some heat. Now I need a bigger stall, maybe a 4400.

Wow, I didn't think that big of a tire would fit a Chevelle ... Is your car "tubbed"?

The only thought I'll leave you with, is I'm sure you'll probably get a lot from a looser converter ... Check through the performance, and transmission forums some ... there are definitely better one's than others out there.

But by all means, don't guess which convertor you want ... and don't take the word of the local performance shop! Call the manufacturer of your choice, and they will be happy to help you ... It's free, and you can KNOW they know what they're talking about.

ahh, it's tight. I gotta roll the fender wells a touch but it'll work.
