: Small Rust Under Paint...

How do you deal with small rust pits under the paint? I stripped the paint of the door and there was several places with small brown rust patch's, some kinda deep. I used a sand paper wheel to get most of it but in some places I would have to grind real deep to get rid of it.

Would using the POR-15 Metal Ready then their Marine Clean do the trick?

Thanks,

Lee

Where are these pits at? If it's not outer diir skin, I'd hit it with POR-15 or some Corroless rust preventer.

If it's outer door skin, you might hafta go with a coarser grit and get all the rust. Finish with lighter grade of paper till you have a smooth surface (no deep scratches) feathering out 2-3 inches from the rusty area.

A light skim coat of glaze or bondo will get ya back to top shape. Then some metal etch epoxy primer.

Grinding the rust spots also removes clean metal, try to refrain from grinding. If the rust spots are on the back or the shell of the door sandblasting is the best answer. If on the door skin first try to rid them with 80 grit on a da sander. If not a helpful little tool that works wonders is a spot blaster or speed blaster. They are hand held sand blasters, cost around 50 bucks and do just about anything. You can blast that spot on the door as they dont have the pressure behind them like the big blasters but can still warp it. Get some glass bends to blast the spot as they dont heat the metal as much as sand will. You can get the speed blasters from a MAC or Snap on dealer or the Eastwood company sells them too, along with the sand and different forms of blasting media.

You might need some filler to smooth out the pits in the metal but apply a coat of etching primer first then two coats of expoy primer then the bondo. If its rusted there before its likely to return, so you want some protection between the bare metal and bondo.
