Anyone ever used this stuff? And if so, was it used with PPG? I priced a couple shops to spray everything for me, and even with the paint I bought it's still very expensive, now I remember why I was going to do it myself. It sucks, places either offer REALLY cheap jobs or high end type stuff. But basically, anyone use transtar? :D

I've used some Transtar products, The clear is OK IMO. I've used it over Dupont and PPG basecoats without problems. They offer a 100% guarantee over anyone's color but the payoff is in materials. The products are no longer available in my area, PPG forced it out of the store that was selling it. The DOI was excellent, it sprayed well, gloss holdout was good, and it buffed ok if done within a few days of spraying. The clear did have really good depth and was clear not yellowish like some. The GM dealership I was working at kept it on the shelf for low buck jobs over Dupont chromebase and premiere base. We had no failures. I did do a 69 Z-28 with transtar clear that turned out really well, the customer had the car for three years winning many trophies it seemed to hold up well. I wouldn't have trouble using Transtar again but for my car I'll be using PPG Global or Dupont Chroma Premiere. I think these systems are a little better. Bob

Thanks a million Bob, thats just what I wanted to hear. I keep going back and fourth between what clear to purchase, and I think this will work pretty well for me. I'll be back when I start to spray next week. This week is all primer and last minute body straightening.
Any tips for laying down top coats? Between base coats Im pretty sure you can do light sanding? Maybe not, between coats what happens, just waiting and respray? Just wondering in case any dust comes in, or doesnt look perfect. Doesnt seem like clears would be sandable, Im worried to shoot the top coat. Ive only done Single stage paints till now. tongue.gif

basecoats are not designed to be sanded but you can knock any nibs off between coats, just be sure to have two good coats down over any sanded areas before you clear. The sanding marks will show up if not recoated. You'll find that spraying clearcoat is basically the same as singlestage. Just track the wetness with your eye as it is being applied and let it tack up well between coats. Plan on wetsanding and buffing the clear if you want good results. Bob

For some reason wetsanding a clear coat freaks me out, I'll do some test panels or something first to see how it works. Anyone have some pictures of the final steps? Thanks for all the help so far. graemlins/beers.gif

My car is painted with lesonal base(Sikens)and Transtar clear and prime. Basically a driveway amateur paint job. You can check out my home page for pics.
I bought my materials at Sunrise paint. A friend of my neighbor did the job.
good luck graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I always wipe the painted surface with a tack cloth between base coats to make sure all the dirt and debris are out before spraying another coat. BC/CC jobs are fun, don't be scared of it. If you mess something up, you can always fix it.
